Assassin's Creed Odyssey Legacy of the First Blade Episode 2: Shadow Heritage Xbox One X Review

Episode 1 of Assassin's Creed Odyssey Legacy of the First Blade was stale and uneventful, leaving players underwhelmed. Fortunately, Episode 2 Shadow Heritage does a better job of not only raising the stakes of what's to come but ends on a high note. The varied mission structure, new weapon, and cliffhanger ending improve on the issues left behind by Hunted while also setting up for the finale.

Shadow Heritage has players returning to Darius to aid him in defeat the Order of the Ancients. You'll perform most the same actions as you did in Hunted, gathering information on a new prime target and killing off Order members. However, here players are presented with a large variety of missions.

Before the player was on a series of stale missions that involved completing basic activities, leading up to a final boss battle while only on land. Here, you'll take to land and sea to defeat a series of difficult enemies. It's still more of what players have been doing in the campaign but the change of scenery helps prevent things from becoming repetitive. The final boss here isn't as challenging as the Huntsman and her story is a bit cliche but it offers more branching paths for the player to undertake.

Unlike the previous episode, Alexios'/Kassandra will have more options on this journey. Whether it's acting cynical and jaded or compassionate and kindhearted. Depending on your actions you'll get one of 2 endings that will play a larger role in the finale. It's an excellent cliffhanger that encourages multiple save files if you want to see everything.

What the episode does strangely is hyping up a powerful weapon, almost like it's a W.M.D. that can annihilate anyone. While on paper it's understandable why this weapon would be a critical tool when you get it, it's a lackluster experience. While flashy, the weapon itself serves more like a novelty than a benefit.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Legacy of the First Blade Episode 2: Shadow Heritage is a step up from the previous episode. The diverse selection of missions is a welcome change from the previous ones. The ultimate weapon featured in the episode is a letdown but it does offer a new tool for players to toy around with. Assassin's Creed Odyssey Legacy of the First Blade Episode 2: Shadow Heritage sets up the finale well enough that players will be excited to see how everything ends.
