Minecraft: Story Mode. Episode 2 simply pushes the story forward

Telltale Games continues their cheery tale into the world of Minecraft with Episode 2 - Assembly Required of Minecraft: Story Mode. Where the first episode left us with a decent opening prologue into this world and the characters that inhabit it Episode 2 seeks to inject some much needed drama. Episode 2 - Assembly Required sets the stage perfectly for Episode 3, leaving so many questions open and the consequences of your decisions left to interpretation.

Minecraft: Story Mode Episode 2 - Assembly Required continues the journey of Jesse and his friends as he attempts to reunite The Order of the Stone in an effort to stop the Wither Storm that threatens the entire world. While at first it seemed cut and dry, gather the most experienced and notorious heroes known throughout the world to fight this great evil things become more complicated. With the episode starting with who you deciding to find first; Magus or Ellegaard. You eventually find out that The Order may not be everything the legends say. This was touched on in Episode 1 but is giving more time to develop in Episode 2 with characters within The Order voicing their opinions about who to trust or who matters more.

This is incorporated into the decisions that Jesse must make. Throughout the episode Jesse was constantly making decisions for everyone, carefully deciding who matter more than others and dissolving conflicts. Should I trust Axel with safeguarding an important item or should I be firm and spare Ellegaard’s feelings for recruiting Magus first? Your friends stand by their heroes but as the unofficial leader it’s up to you to make the final decision for the group.

The dialogue remains the same clever assortment of Minecraft jargon and light-hearted humor. At times it can excite a chuckle but mostly it’s dry. Where as Episode 1 integrated these concepts into the game itself in Episode 2 it’s forced.

Players won’t find any tedious puzzles or crafting challenges here. Instead most of the episode is straight forward. You’ll build structures by tapping a single button, input button commands during quick time events, and choose from up to four decision in a finite amount of time. Don’t expect any clever monuments or clever use of the building materials given like Episode 1, the structures have a simple function and serve that purpose alone.

Minecraft: Story Mode Episode 2 - Assembly Required adds what Episode 1 was lacking. At the end I was left wonderingwhat would happen next, only for the episode to end. It doesn’t add anything creative to distinguish itself from Episode 1 and serves as an adequate installment to Minecraft: Story Mode. Episode 2 simply pushes the story forward.
