A dark and twisted otome adventure where love, trauma, and dangerous choices collide in a disturbing reimagining of Oz.

ER REQUIEMZ takes one of the most well-known fantasy stories ever produced and twists it into something much darker, more disturbing, and substantially more character-centered. Developed by Kogado Studio and released in the West by Aksys Games, this otome visual novel reimagines The Wizard of Oz as a mature narrative of broken individuals, discrimination, trauma, affection, and the repercussions of pushing relationships too far.

Rather than just having a heroine walk down a magical yellow brick road to a happy conclusion, the game dumps her into a hazardous version of Oz where being different could get you killed. The outcome is an otome experience that feels very different from many games in the genre. Unlike most games, which constantly prompt you to choose the dialog option that will make a love interest happy, OVER REQUIEMZ keeps most dialog choices open for roleplaying.

OVER REQUIEMZ Review

Most decisions only change how Yuhiru behaves and reacts to the characters; however, the truly crucial ones are clearly stated.

This shifts the game away from a relationship challenge and onto what kind of person you want its protagonist to be. Some of the romance is subdued, and some of the tale's reveals are predictable, but the darker elements create uncomfortable circumstances that give OVER REQUIEMZ a unique personality. The story begins with Yuhiru, a Japanese high school girl who feels confined by her daily life.

After wishing she could get away somewhere far away, a tornado whisks her off to another realm. Eventually, she wakes up in the land of Oz, but this is not the colorful, friendly fantasy realm you might expect. Deserts and ruins surround Oz. Society is apprehensive of people with black hair and dark eyes because of an old belief that associates these qualities with demons.

At first glance, Yuhiru looks dangerous. Mistaken for an intruder, she is arrested and condemned to death. Fortunately for her, Oz has a strange procedure for dealing with death-row inmates. Prisoners can go on expeditions into dangerous ruins infested with creatures, and if they succeed in their objective, they might even clear their charges. So Yuhiru is sent out with five men who are themselves dangerous criminals. Dorothy is watching over the gang.

What works especially well about the set-up is that the ruins aren’t just fantasy dungeons. They connect to other worlds, including the one Yuhiru came from, which offers a possible way home. This makes the universe a bigger mystery and gives the characters a reason to keep going. Unfortunately, the game doesn't examine every facet of this notion as fully as it should.

Oz's judicial system, the ruins, and the world links occasionally feel more like padding for the character routes than fully developed parts of the setting. The usual route is short: it gets the group up and running quickly, then sends them on their way. From there, the game focuses heavily on the different character pathways. Each love interest has their own struggles, enemies, secrets, and spin on the Wizard of Oz theme.

This approach lets you spend much more time on character development instead of constantly hopping between unrelated plotlines.

One of the biggest assets is the reimagining of familiar Oz characters. For example, Noel is based on the Cowardly Lion, but he’s not just a nervous guy in different clothing. Beneath his aggression, pride, physical strength, and sense of duty lie deeper vulnerabilities. The other characters also borrow concepts from the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and other elements of the original story, but they're not simple replicas.

The narrative becomes much more interesting when it takes its Dark pathways. Each character has Fact and Dark branches, resulting in four endings for each character. The Fact side usually seeks the truth about the character and perhaps reaches a healthier conclusion. The Dark side is what happens when things- misunderstandings, trauma, and personal vulnerabilities push the connection in a far worse way.

These Dark pathways are undoubtedly the defining aspect of OVER REQUIEMZ. The game also makes it believable why characters go bad, rather than randomly making them evil for shock value. It can be distressing to watch someone slowly take increasingly damaging actions because you can see exactly how they got there. Molly's particular route is notable for its gloom and its capacity to provide a few truly shocking outcomes.

Not all routes, however, are created equal. Noil’s Dark route feels too clear and monotonous, whereas Dorothy’s route has some important disclosures that make it feel almost like a final route despite the game letting you choose the characters in any order. Some twists are also obvious hours before the game really discloses them. Still, the character-driven plot remains one of the game’s good points.

OVER REQUIEMZ is an amazing anime-like visual novel and therefore doesn’t rely on battle, exploration, or other mechanical progression. Most of your time will be spent reading conversation, following the tale, making decisions, and occasionally figuring out which direction a character’s route goes. The real fun is how the game handles those choices.

OVER REQUIEMZ Food Choices

Most decisions are not structured like typical affection checks.

You don’t have to keep figuring out which answer will give you the biggest bonus with a given persona. Instead, many choices are simply about roleplaying Yuhiru the way you personally see her characteristics. This feels more natural because you can answer based on what you think she would actually say, rather than worrying about whether the game thinks your answer is "correct."

The UI makes the main choices obvious. Branching decisions are visually indicated, so it is relatively straightforward to see when a decision may modify the route. This can be especially helpful when trying to reach the various Fact and Dark endings. Smaller choices also unlock more of the characters’ voice messages. They don’t really affect the tale, but they are a great little incentive to try other selections and revisit areas.

The game’s flowchart, auto mode, skip functions, go-to-next-choice option, unread text jump, rewind, and dialog log also make many playthroughs much easier. No XP system, no grinding, no equipment, no character progression. That's exactly right for this kind of game. Your progress is about discovering new branches and endings to the story. You don’t have to grind through repeated content to acquire another character either, as routes can be played in any order.

Requiemz is not built around a conventional puzzle or battle system. There are trips into monster-filled ruins in the story, but you don't actually control Yuhiru or the other characters in battle. These episodes largely serve the story and provide background on the characters' relationships and the perilous world they inhabit.

This might disappoint gamers hoping the dungeon premise would expand into an adventure-style gameplay system, but it puts the game’s focus firmly on its strongest element: character development. It’s not combat-heavy, so the tale is not bogged down with extraneous mechanics. The only hint of challenge in the gameplay is in the branching storyline and trying to work out which decisions will take you to particular endings. Luckily, the game makes this rather easy.

OVER REQUIEMZ Dialogue Choices

The visual cues reduce much of the irritation normally involved in searching for cryptic route requirements.

The problem is that the simplicity can often make the experience feel a little too passive. There isn't much participation from those hoping for more than reading and choosing speech. But that’s more an issue of genre expectations than a major fault. It certainly lives up to its darker image, with Requiemz in the cast. Each character is fully developed, with their own personality and psychological difficulties, and interactions with Yuhiru are built on emotional intimacy rather than frequent romantic gestures.

Claude is one of the more approachable characters and offers an easy entry point into the cast. His progressive warming and emotional growth make his path easy to invest in. Noil, by contrast, has more overt romantic attraction and is especially good for you if you want the relationship itself to take more focus. Molly is probably the best character.

His route takes a slightly more confrontational tone than many of the others, with disclosures that can really catch you off guard. His past and relationship with Yuhiru show the game's potential when it dives deep into its psychological elements. Noel offers another strong reading of the Oz theme, disguising weakness under aggression and bravado. His path is more about getting to know the person behind rather than falling for a pretty face.

Dorothy is an especially intriguing case. His presence on the other routes can make him feel like an ideal buddy, even a better wingman than a romantic target. His individual route offers vital information about the greater tale, which is why playing it later can make some of its revelations more impactful. Romance itself is a little erratic.

Plenty of warm, intimate moments appear, but certain routes focus more on pain, mystery, violence, and psychological drama than on romantic growth. So if you're looking for endless lovey-dovey sequences, then you may find OVER REQUIEMZ unexpectedly restrained. Meanwhile, the technique will likely appeal to those interested in partnerships amid challenging emotional circumstances.

Visually, OVER REQUIEMZ features the slick character art you would expect from a contemporary otome. The character designs are nice and instantly convey the cast's personalities and concepts. CGs for events are great when the plot gets darker, because the characters' faces can go from cute to just really uncomfortable.

The game’s settings also help create its version of Oz.

The realm often seems dull, worn, and unpleasant rather than a vibrant, colorful dream kingdom. The ruins add to that mood and help set the game apart from more traditional takes on the subject matter. The visual presentation, however, is not perfect. Some backgrounds repeat too often, and some CGs feel flatter than they should.

The locations sometimes don’t have the variety needed to make Oz feel like a fully developed planet. The presentation relies more on character painting and atmosphere than on environmental detail. For the Japanese voice cast, it is a lot of work, especially since the same characters have to be credible on both the Fact and Dark pathways. Their performances are what sell the incremental shifts in personality and emotional pressure.

Claude’s performance shows his accessible side before revealing further weakness, and the other characters' performances also adapt to the increasingly distressing situations. Dorothy’s voice also contrasts with his look, giving him a presence that feels intentionally at odds with what his bright design might suggest.

The soundtrack is not as noteworthy. The music matches scenes of sadness, tension, and emotional breakdown rather well, but it doesn't necessarily have the same impact as the script or voice acting. The opening tune fits the game's melancholy mood well; however, the sound is more practical than excellent overall. OVER REQUIEMZ is an otome visual novel that succeeds because it knows relationships can be far more intriguing than affection meters.

Its freeform approach to conversational choices lets you roleplay as Yuhiru instead of constantly guessing what each love interest wants to hear.

This makes the character interactions feel more genuine and gives the various routes more personality. The game’s finest triumph is its willingness to examine the unpleasant side of relationships. Its Dark paths can be violent, poisonous, possessive, and mentally upsetting. Still, these moments usually stem from the characters’ established personalities and circumstances rather than feeling like a cheap shock effect.

OVER REQUIEMZ Travel Mechanics

Molly's route is especially effective; others don't always reach the same heights. The story leaves more space for world-building; some turns are predictable, and the romance can occasionally get lost in harsher narrative material. The rehashed scenery and somewhat forgettable soundtrack also keep the presentation from matching the writing.

But OVER REQUIEMZ has its own individuality. It's not just another otome game where you find the answer and the affection meter goes up. It's a deeper character study in a distorted Wizard of Oz, and its best moments reveal just how captivating that pairing can be.

If you love a steady diet of romantic sweetness, enter this with altered expectations. Still, fans of psychological drama, ethically gray characters, and darker relationship stories have much to enjoy.

Verdict

Over Requiemz delivers a compelling dark otome experience with memorable characters, meaningful choices, and disturbing routes, though predictable twists, restrained romance, and limited world-building hold it back.
