BOOK OF HOURS Guide | Mastering Skills & Reading Books

Here's a complete beginner's guide to Soul Fragments, Skills, Lessons, and Library Study in Book of Hours.

The two main mechanisms that influence the progress of Book of Hours are Skills and Books. Both are connected to the Soul pieces, memories, and features that characterize a character's powers. Knowing how these systems operate changes the first experience, transforming the mysteries of the library into routes that can be solved rather than perplexing obstacles.

This guide explains how to unlock new Soul fragments, improve skills, read books effectively, and manage the small "mini-games" connected to each system.

Unlocking Soul Fragments

Reading the Journal

Early progress begins with reading the protagonist's journal. This step reveals fragments of the character's past and unlocks the first set of Soul fragments.

Reading the journal twice is required.

The first reading is simple and accepts almost any memory.

The second reading introduces the game's first challenge: meeting the aspect requirement of the book.

If the journal shows a Lantern challenge, the inserted memory or supporting card must contain Lantern points. Only aspects that match the challenge will help meet the reading requirement.

Once the journal is read successfully, new Soul fragments are awarded.

Unlocking New Skills

Receiving Lessons

After completing journal readings, the first Lessons appear. Lessons resemble memories but function differently:

Lessons do not fade at dawn.

They remain until used to unlock or upgrade a skill.

They only disappear during a rare seasonal event.

Each lesson belongs to a specific aspect and determines the type of skill that can be created.

Turning Lessons Into Skills

A lesson is placed into the Consideration Window to create a new skill. Once the process is complete, the lesson transforms into a permanent Skill Card.

Skill cards contain:

Their own aspect values

A list of attuned occult paths

A special ability related to their discipline

For example, a Forge-based skill may allow crafting candles. Every skill offers unique functions that become essential later.

Upgrading Skills

Skill advancement uses the same Consideration Window but requires more steps. The upgrade mini-game has very strict rules:

What is required to upgrade a skill

One Lesson

The lesson must share at least one aspect with the skill being upgraded.

One Soul Fragment placed in the Effort slot

This cannot be skipped.

Supporting Memory or Weather

Cards placed here must share aspects with the skill.

Weather, memories, or extra lessons all work, but lessons are best saved for learning new skills.

When all required slots are filled with matching aspects, the upgrade begins.

Higher-level skills require more slots, making upgrades increasingly complex. Later stages need multiple memories, weather effects, or symbols gathered from both the library and the landscape.

Using the Skill Board

Attuning Skills to Occult Paths

The Skill Board is a large circular wheel divided into multiple occult paths. Each skill can be aligned with one of two possible paths shown when picking it up.

Effects of attuning a skill:

A new Soul fragment is unlocked immediately.

The skill becomes valid for any challenge requiring that occult school.

This is crucial for puzzle-solving later.

Choosing Where to Place Each Skill

Each attunement node shows which Soul fragment it awards. Selecting different paths can produce different fragments.

A useful strategy is to prioritize fragments not yet collected, ensuring the full set becomes available. Balanced fragment collection provides more flexibility in reading books, clearing challenges, and exploring deeper rooms.

Deeper Advancement on the Wheel

Paths on the board unlock in tiers:

First tier requires a rank 1 skill.

Second tier requires rank 2, and so on.

Advancing down a path eventually reveals rare Soul fragments and complex challenge solutions.

Understanding Books and the Reading System

Identifying Unknown Books

Unidentified books must be examined before reading. Any Soul fragment (except Health) can identify a book. Once identified, the book displays:

Its language

Its aspect challenge

Its corruption status

Corrupted books should only be read when prepared to break corruption — otherwise, a Soul fragment may be damaged.

Choosing Which Books to Read First

Books with a challenge rating of 4 or 6 are the easiest to begin with. The challenge rating determines the amount of aspect required to successfully read it.

For example:

A Heart-aspect book with rating 6 needs six points of Heart spread across skills, memories, weather, or Soul fragments.

Reading Books: The Mini-Game

Reading begins by inserting:

A Soul fragment with the correct aspect

A supporting Skill (optional in early stages)

A memory or weather (consumed after use)

If the inserted cards do not reach the required total, the reading can still start. The reading mini-game gives chances to make up missing points.

Random Reading Events

After a short period, three random influences appear. These may include:

An extra Soul slot

An extra Skill slot

Random aspect points

Temporary places to put decorations or comfort items

The unpredictability makes things more tense, but it typically gives you an opportunity to satisfy your needs. When you can, filling additional spaces makes you more likely to succeed.

But failing may damage Soul fragments, which means you need to rest to heal.

Finishing a Book

Once the requirement is met:

A short description reveals the book's meaning.

A temporary Memory is awarded.

One or more Lessons are granted.

Lessons from books fuel the entire skill system, making reading one of the most essential activities in the library.

Using Lessons From Books

New lessons can be spent in two ways:

Learn New Skills

Essential for filling the Skill Board.

Upgrade Existing Skills

Useful for meeting advanced challenge requirements.

A well-rounded toolkit includes both new talents and improvements.

The Skill and Book systems in Book of Hours work together to move the story along, solve puzzles, and help characters develop. Skills unlock new paths, Soul fragments open deeper mysteries, and books provide the lessons that fuel both systems.

Understanding how to assemble aspect values, handle the reading mini-game, and strategically attune skills makes exploration much more fulfilling.
