You will be unable to utilize the first gate you encounter, but if you pass through a door with the same icon as this gate, you will be able to locate another one. Interacting with it adds it to your collection. If you pass through one of these doors, you risk having to run back to a previous place.

Each time a player enters one of these rooms, a symbol appears on the wall, and interacting with the gate unlocks the corresponding symbol. How Many Gates Are There in Soul Reaver
