No Rest for the Wicked Guide | How to Get the Best Early-Game Weapons Before Sacrament

Here’s a guide on how to get the best early-game weapons before reaching Sacrament in No Rest for the Wicked.

Game Guide by Imdeadfrfr on  Jun 12, 2026

Your character has woken up on the rocky shores of Sacra after a violent shipwreck, in absolute rags, without proper equipment and defensive scaling. No Rest for the Wicked has a nasty first phase, where you have to make your way through deadly monster-infested ruins before finally finding safety. The early coastal areas and the broken passages of Mariner’s Keep are a harsh test, where the weapons you pick will determine how fast you’ll get out alive.

Many new players make the mistake of rushing straight down the main story path, grabbing whatever tattered wooden clubs or broken rusty iron swords they happen to find first. With the baseline, tattered gear makes your early combat encounters drag on forever, turning basic enemies into complete brick walls that chew through your precious healing supplies. Getting a top-tier, specialized weapon early on massively boosts your damage output and builds up your resource momentum before you even step inside the hub city gates.

Luckily, the beginning area of the game is filled with very powerful weapons if you know exactly where to look and how to look beyond the main roads. So while loot is randomized to a large degree structurally when it drops from common enemies and regular containers, it is very helpful to know where fixed placement locations are. This complete early-game weapon guide lists the very best weapons to find before you get to Sacrament, with their exact locations, combat mechanic advantages, and stat requirements.

Discovering the Devastating Power of the Claymore

If you’re a player that prefers to play a heavy, high-impact martial playstyle that rewards patience and precise timing, then the iconic Claymore is an absolute top-tier choice. This greatsword is a two-handed weapon, and is meant to be used for slow, crushing blows that will cut through multiple clustered enemies with ease. It has a really great reach advantage, so you can space out aggressive melee fighters and strike them before they can get into their own active strike range.

Unlike many of the highly randomized items found along the shoreline, the Claymore has a guaranteed environmental location that can be accessed almost immediately after the opening sequence. Once you get your character back on the beach, ignore the paths straight north and only go along the western coastlines. You’ll need to cross a crumbling stone bridge structure and carefully follow the meandering shoreline path leading to an isolated, ruined tower.

Just outside the base of this coastal tower is a large, pristine iron treasure chest containing the coveted greatsword. To wield the Claymore you’ll need to put a few points into your Strength attribute so you’ll need to use your first level-up stat points to meet its heavy physical scaling requirements. Once active, the weapon’s default runic ability, Juggle Strike, is an absolute posture-breaking monster that can utterly floor elite vanguard guards.

Scythe of Wretches and the Early Agility Loop

If your character build is less of a slow raw power type and more of a fast tactical movement type with high dexterity then hunting for the Scythe of Wretches is absolutely essential. This good two-handed pole-arm combines the long tracking reach of a spear with the wide sweeping crowd-control arcs of a huge executioner's blade. It scales very well with a Dex/Faith build and is a perfect starting point for a very mobile, elemental fighter build.

Your character can perform high-velocity jump-slashes with the normal combat animation loop of the Scythe of Wretches, covering a significant amount of physical ground. The unique forward momentum makes it incredibly easy to jump straight over short range enemy standard attacks, landing your damage safely before dashing away. Its native runic power Reap releases a devastating full-circle horizontal sweep, dealing an enormous amount of physical damage to anything caught in the radius.

To obtain this high-value scythe before you get to the city you’ll need a combination of solid exploration throughout Mariner’s Keep, and a little structural luck with environmental chests. Just before the main mess hall chamber, systematically remove the hidden wooden scaffolds and upper stone parapets. Clearing out all the hidden containers in these vertical side paths will often net you this agility-focused weapon, giving you an immediate advantage against the first major campaign boss.

Ranged Pressure Mastery: The Short Bow

Early on, stepping away from the all-melee style can do wonders for your overall survivability in complex, multi-enemy battles. The Short Bow is one of the most mechanically unique, and insanely powerful, tactical utilities you can get your hands on before setting foot into the governor's inner sanctum. This dexterous ranged option scales quite nicely with your Dexterity score, allowing you to comfortably soften heavily armored targets from the greatest safety.

The greatest thing about the Short Bow’s mechanics is that it completely removes the need to craft or carry physical arrows as ammunition. Instead, when using the bow, your character’s focus pool of blue is expended to create an unlimited supply of spectral projectiles via the built-in runic attack slots. It’s a design that lets you switch between rapid single-target arrows and a Multishot spread that hits wide to control advancing enemy formations.

To reliably obtain the Short Bow before finishing the prologue, you need to find a stranded merchant NPC called Filmore inside the fortified walls of Mariner’s Keep. You will find him stuck inside a heavily guarded mess hall area with a lot of aggressive rebel soldiers around. When you've taken care of the immediate hostile threats and freed him, Filmore will open a specialized shop inventory with this highly sought after bow.

Blood-Rusted Sword: All-Arounder Balance

The Blood-Rusted Sword is a great option for players looking to build a traditional, well-rounded vanguard character with a classic sword-and-shield setup. This is a reliable one-handed straight sword that scales only with your Strength, and has a very versatile and forgiving animation framework for beginners. It has a fast combo of light slashes, quick stabs and a powerful heavy overhead hit that covers all combat scenarios.

The main mechanical advantage of using the Blood-Rusted Sword is the very low stamina cost per individual swing. This high efficiency means you can do a full four hit offensive combo and still have enough green energy to do an immediate defensive roll. The weapon has a pre-slotted, unique Spin rune attack that spins your character around, doing continuous posture damage to all threats around you.

It will be purchasable directly alongside the short bow in the Filmore's early rescue inventory, as well as randomized rare drops in the lower storage cellars of the keep. A particular blade combined with a standard medium wooden shield makes for a very sustainable defensive loop. You can safely take the first running attack from an enemy on your shield barrier, then counter with a quick light combo to quickly farm focus points.

Gnarled Staff of Arcane Fire

If you want to play as a pure spellcaster type right from the beach, you need to find a solid catalyst weapon right away. The Gnarled Staff is the absolute premier early game intelligence weapon and will be your main vehicle for launching destructive magical elements. This two-handed staff is directly scaled with your Intelligence statistic, and utterly converts your character into an effective long-range arcane artillery unit.

The Gnarled Staff is a must-have weapon for that reason alone, since it comes with the Fireball runic spell as a default in-built use. This active spell can be charged manually to unleash a large ball of flame which explodes, dealing heavy burn damage in a large impact area. A fully charged fireball has a base raw damage that absolutely dwarfs normal physical weapon hits, so you'll have no trouble melting early game elite targets.

The staff also has a very practical secondary utility rune called Channel which allows you to sacrifice a small amount of your health in order to generate focus points on the spot. This means you can completely avoid the early resource scarcity, by converting your readily available cooking stews into raw magical fuel. This staff is commonly found by fully exploring the shipwrecks littering the easternmost edge of the starting shallows area (the shipwrecks also have water-logged

Optimizing Your Starting Inventory and Upgrades

With your desired early-game armament in hand from the ruins of Mariner’s Keep, it’s important to squeeze every bit of raw efficiency out of it before taking on the final gate guardian. You only have Filmore's basic anvil setups, you do not have access to the advanced enchanting and socketing services that are available inside Sacrament. Use the copper coins and scrap metal you got from breaking the wooden barrels to upgrade the base tier level of your chosen weapon.

Each tier upgrade you put into the weapon massively inflates the flat physical or elemental damage values of the weapon, which directly cuts down your boss fight times. Make sure to keep an eye on the structural durability meter of your weapon. If you attack stone walls or keep dying, the blade will eventually break and you will lose the stat bonuses. If you take the time to explore side paths by saving local merchants and upgrading your gear early, you'll walk comfortably through the city gates.
