Yoshinobu Tokugawa represents the Shogun himself and stands as one of the most politically significant allies you can recruit in the game. His recruitment occurs through a direct combat encounter, where you must prove your martial prowess against the highest authority in Japan.

Tokugawa offers dual weapon expertise and unique ki enhancement capabilities.
How to Unlock Yoshinobu Tokugawa
To get Yoshinobu Tokugawa to join your side, you have to finish the ronin task "A Show for the Shogun" and fight him at the end of the mission. As you move through the main story, you'll be able to access this task. Tokugawa is the final opponent in a number of battle trials.
For the "A Show for the Shogun" task, you have to fight different opponents several times to see how good you are at martial arts. Several rounds of these preliminary fights prepare you for your final match with the Shogun.

You have to beat all of the earlier fights in the task before you can move on to the final fight against Tokugawa. Each fight adds up to the final battle with Japan's great master and shows how good you are at what you do.
The fight with Tokugawa is both a test of your martial arts skills and a show that you are worthy of being on the same level as the Shogun. Being able to beat him in battle shows that you are strong and wins his respect.
Once the battle is over and all task goals are met, Tokugawa will become a lifelong friend and one of the most famous recruits in the game.
Combat Abilities and Equipment
Yoshinobu Tokugawa fights with both katana and odachi swords, showing that he is a master of many types of swords, which fits with his role as Japan's top military leader. Being good with two weapons lets him deal with different kinds of enemies and battle settings.
Some of his tools have special qualities that make enemies burn, dealing more fire damage over time. This improvement makes his moves stronger against opponents with a lot of armor, and the damage keeps happening after the first hits.

Throwing spikes is his backup weapon. They let him hit enemies from a distance and engage them at a medium range before getting close enough to fight them. His sword-fighting skills have improved with these weapons.
His blessing ability is called "Curse of the Shogun," which increases the rate at which your ki regenerates and becomes full during combat encounters. This enhancement allows for more frequent use of special abilities and maintains higher combat effectiveness throughout extended battles.
Bond Level Rewards and Combat Training
When you reach maximum bond level with Yoshinobu Tokugawa, he provides specialized training in odachi combat techniques. He teaches you the Yagyu Sekishusai Ryu combat style for your odachi, which comes from the Chi skill tree. This represents one of the most prestigious combat styles available in the game.

There are many advanced moves in the Yagyu Sekishusai Ryu style that focus on the odachi's length and cutting power. These methods work well for controlling crowds and give you choices for both attacking hits and defensive positioning.
At the highest level of bond, Tokugawa gives you two skill points that you can use to improve your character's strengths in different areas of the game.

The combination of dual sword mastery, fire-enhanced weapons, enhanced ki regeneration, prestigious combat training, and skill point rewards makes Tokugawa one of the most valuable allies for players who want to maximize their combat effectiveness and gain access to the highest level of martial training available in the game.
