Steam Frame Reservation System Appears Ahead of Possible Valve Launch

Steam Frame is getting closer to release, with changes inside Valve's backend pointing toward a possible launch announcement. Package updates and a reservation system have appeared for the headset, while Steam Frame welcome videos have also returned to Steam. Steam Frame has received multiple package updates again.

Steam hardware updates have previously shown similar activity in the single-digit days before a launch, making the latest changes worth watching. Valve has also added the Steam Frame welcome videos back into Steam. More importantly, Valve already has a Steam Frame reservation system in place in its backend.

Steam Frame Package Updates Point Toward a Launch

A release date for the Steam Frame has not yet been officially announced. However, data mining by VR leaker Brad Lynch has uncovered a reservation system in Valve's backend, suggesting that the hardware may not be far off. Lynch shared a look at the reservation system on X, though it isn't live yet.

The placeholder showed a Steam Frame wait-list message with a date of November 31, 1969. The list would be randomized, and users would receive an email with their results shortly after. The reservation system appears to already be up in Steam's backend for two Steam Frame SKUs. Lynch said it was probably enabled alongside the package updates.

The 1969 date is clearly a placeholder, and it is not intended to represent an actual launch date. The date was likely selected to prevent any part of the system from going live before Valve is ready. Lynch also clarified that nothing can be done with the information to beat the lottery system. The reservation system isn't surprising, as Valve has used similar systems for the Steam Machine and Steam Controller.

Two Steam Frame Storage Options Are Confirmed

Amid speculation about different Steam Frame SKUs, Valve has confirmed two configurations: a 256GB Steam Frame and a 1TB Steam Frame. An optional ergonomic accessories kit will also be available for purchase. The kit is not expected to be included with the Steam Frame by default. The reservation system appearing for these two SKUs is another indication that Valve is preparing the headset for release.

It also suggests that initial stock may not be enough to meet demand without a reservation system. Since June, the reservation queue for the Steam Machine has been shorter, while Steam Controller reservations will probably be longer. A similar method for the Steam Frame would allow Valve to control demand if supply is constrained at launch.
