PlayStation To Have A Showcase Week on May 25th
Will PlayStation Pull Out All The Stops?
News by MChipmunks on May 09, 2023
It’s the most wonderful time of the year to be a gamer. The grass is greener, the weather is warmer, and the gaming rumor mill begins to churn evermore. While E3 2023 has been canceled that hasn’t stopped the big 3 from making hype-fueled announcements. Nintendo has Tears of the Kingdom this week. Microsoft has made an announcement for an Xbox Games Showcase on June 11th, followed by a Starfield Direct. This is much needed for Xbox to gain some momentum after the disappointing launch of Redfall and Phil Spencer’s doom and gloom speech on Kinda Funny’s Xbox centric podcast; Xcast last week.
According to longtime industry insider Jeff Grubb, PlayStation is expected to hold their own showcase in the week of May 25th. This should be a gargantuan-sized showcase. A remake of the beloved Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater has been rumored in the past week and would be a pleasant surprise for Metal Gear fans. A prequel comic for Insomniac’s highly anticipated Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has dropped for Free Comic Book Day, highlighting a Fall 2023 release date. The ball is in Sony’s court with this showcase. While Xbox has been having a tough time getting a foothold in gamer’s hearts this year, this could be the perfect time for PlayStation to have a massive blowout. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 footage and a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake announcement would be enough to win over most gamer’s wallets.
This is reminiscent of the summer of 2013 when Xbox had an abysmal showing of the Xbox One and its horrendous DRM practices. Then President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, Jack Tretton, had the ability to capitalize on that to give PlayStation incredible leverage over their competition. History seems to repeat itself here just ten years later. In addition to Spider-Man and Metal Gear, a new Ape Escape along with Wolverine footage, would be incredible.
