A new Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics has reportedly been in development.

Lara Croft, the female lead in the Tomb Raider series, is one of the most successful video game characters of all time. Not only has she left a lasting impact on both players and the gaming industry, but many consider her the most beloved female protagonist, and I certainly count myself among them. Sadly, however, there hasn't been a new Tomb Raider game since the release of Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018, which concluded the Survivor Trilogy. But rumor has it that a new Tomb Raider game, developed by an AAA studio, will be unveiled shortly.

Contrary to how leaks take place these days, this rumor about a new Tomb Raider game was made based on the report that Crystal Dynamics and Amazon Games are working on a project using Unreal Engine 5. All that the leakers said is that there will be a debut of a brand new, AAA-quality Tomb Raider game, which, honestly, I find a very far-fetched possibility.

New Tomb Raider Game, Tomb Raider 2025

The source is vague on the specific date of the game's reveal. The only thing it guarantees is that the game will be unveiled this year and points towards Daniel Camilo, a writer for GamesIndustry, as the source. Compared to the typical source for such rumors—anonymous leakers on different social networks—this source does not have much evidence to support this rumor. Even though the leaker didn't provide any viable evidence, he seemed pretty certain about this and tried to provide additional hints that supported the possibility.

For instance, Aspyr, the publisher of the Tomb Raider Remastered series, has suggested that the upcoming game might receive a physical release. This speculation gained further traction when Matthew Ray, the brand manager, stated that more details about a physical edition would be shared in the future. Instead, it could be Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered, including enhanced versions of the 1999 title Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, the 2000 game Tomb Raider: Chronicles, and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, which came out in 2003. If there's a remaster, a raft of expected graphical updates could join other gameplay updates like updated controls and photo modes and more quality-of-life tweaks.

Again, the development lies in the hands of Aspyr, who worked on Tomb Raider I-III Remastered: Starring Lara Croft. Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered will be published this week, and judging from their previous work, this one might see some improvements. The fact that Aspyr was in charge of remastering the previous trilogy seemed to ease concerns about this new project.

If true, these rumors might mean one of the biggest gaming announcements this year. PlayStation has a State of Play event this week, so many fans expect the new Tomb Raider game to be shown at said event officially. Neither Crystal Dynamics nor Amazon Games has made an official statement on this latest rumor. So, if the rumor is indeed true, this is indeed exciting news for fans of the Tomb Raider Survivor trilogy.
