Call of Duty is one of the most popular and successful franchises in entertainment. With a new game launching each year in rotation. Call of Duty 2020 has been in development apparently by Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games but now will be taking a supporting role as development shifts to Treyarch.

Reported by Kotaku's Jason Schreier, Activision has shifted development of the 2020's Call of Duty to Treyarch. The game will be set in the Cold War and will take what the other studios have developed into a campaign for the Black Ops series.

According to those briefed on the overhaul, Treyarch will take creative leadership on this new Black Ops while Raven and Sledgehammer will serve as support studios for the game, transforming the work they’ve done on their own single-player story mode into a campaign for Black Ops 5, which will also be set during the Cold War. (This may be a welcome return for fans, who criticized the lack of campaign in Black Ops 4.) It will likely be a cross-gen game, to coincide with the launch of the next PlayStation and Xbox, which are also expected in the fall of 2020.

Schreier offered his arguments of why the shift occurred. Stating that tensions between Sledgehammer and Raven caused arguments about how to develop Call of Duty 2020. With 2 people familiar with the project calling it a mess.

Treyarch, according to Schreier, has split reactions about the decision. With some annoyed, they'll have 2 years instead of 3 to develop a new game and the crutch following Black Ops 4 was draining. While others have express joy and have ideas of how to progress with the project.

As of now, a new installment in the Call of Duty franchise is set to reveal at E3 2019 and is in development by Infinity Ward. So it's unlikely we'll see anything about this project until next year.
