Google Stadia Releases New Game Right Before It Goes Offline
Google Stadia will shut down forever on 18 January 2023, but the service has released its final game right before the end.

Google Stadia released back in 2019 and it was supposed to be a “Netflix for games” of sorts, in which you only needed a strong enough internet connection to stream games rather than install them. It’s a great overall idea, but one that depends on a good internet connection and Google continuing to push it. However, neither of those things happened and the service is now going offline on 18 January, but ahead of its eternal disappearance from the internet, the service has released a new game.
This new game is simply called Worm Game, and it was announced on the Stadia website. This game was used to test many of Stadia’s features while development was ongoing. Essentially, it’s a tech demo that isn’t too demanding. It is also, effectively, like the classic game Snake. It has a few modes, such as campaign, arcade, multiplayer, and build. This was released as a final farewell by the company behind Stadia.
This game will also completely disappear seemingly forever as soon as Stadia goes offline. Which isn’t great, but it’s the way things go when a game is hosted entirely on the cloud and that cloud is then disabled. However, Google did provide one other thing via Twitter before Stadia vanishes from the internet, and that’s a self-serve took to enable Bluetooth connections on the Stadia Controller. This should allow the controller to be used on other platforms.
Google Stadia did not quite make the wave that Google, or enthusiastic early adopters, may have been expecting, and instead made little more than a splash. Perhaps game streaming will rise again in the future, but for now, downloading and then playing games will likely remain the preferred method of engaging with video games.
