Console exclusivity comes with a set of pros and cons - On the one hand, you attract a lot of new players to a console and on the other, you lock your game to one platform. Probably one of the biggest issues with console exclusivity is the issue of preservation. Console lifespans eventually come to an end and support for exclusive titles get cut, such is the case with Gran Turismo Sport, a PS4 exclusive title that will no longer be getting support from Sony.
Gran Turismo Sport was released back in 2017 as an exclusive for the PS4. Sadly, the game didn't fare too well and was met with mostly mixed reviews from both gamers and critics. Most of these mixed reviews were tied to the game's online multiplayer, which featured numerous different modes but was limited in tracks and vehicle variety. Many felt that Gran Turismo Sport offered less than the other entries in the series. Most likely because of this, Sony will be ending support for the game's various multiplayer modes on 31 January 2024.
Unfortunately, shutting down the game’s multiplayer modes isn't the only bad news for players who enjoyed the game, because on 1 December 2023, all DLC content for the game will no longer be available for purchase. As for what modes will be shutting down, these modes will include Community, Open Lobby, and the flagship Sport Mode which was a mode exclusive to Gran Turismo Sport. Players will also no longer be able to access Community creations after the shut-down takes place. All offline modes will still be available for players to play and they will also still have access to all previously purchased DLC content.
With the game's numerous online modes shutting down, this also means that many of the game's trophies will also no longer be achievable after 31 January 2024. If you were interested in obtaining the Platinum Trophy for Gran Turismo Sport, it would be in your best interest to try and unlock the trophies as soon as possible, as you will only have a few months before they become completely unobtainable.
It's sad to see a console exclusive game lose its online support, with many of its achievements becoming unobtainable. While it is uncertain, a similar fate could be waiting for Gran Turismo Sport's successor, Gran Turismo 7, which was much more positively received than its predecessor. Though the game has received high praise, it has also received a fair share of criticism, especially regarding its reliance on online features. There's no telling what's in store for the game, but if a similar fate is to befall it, then Gran Turismo 7 might become unplayable as well.
