Hogwarts Legacy 2 Was Planned A Live Service Game
Warner Brothers' greed, as, believe it or not, it was rumored that the next Hogwarts Legacy game would have live service elements.

The long-awaited follow-up to the 2023 smash game Hogwarts Legacy, this action RPG set inside the wizarding realm, has garnered fans all over, and the thought of a sequel has sparked varied interests. Warner Brothers Games has said unequivocally that the initial game's incredible popularity comes first, followed by producing a sequel.
Although past information and rumors have revealed that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is presently under development and a major focus. Hogwarts Legacy 2 is interconnecting stories with the Harry Potter HBO series. David Haddad, the CEO of Warner Brothers Discovery, said that things have been greatly discussed about Hogwarts Legacy 2 and how this game is going to be connected to the series.
Many people are concerned that the game will now also be happening close to the same time or in sync with the HBO series, which was not the trilogy's original intended schedule. Originally, the three games were scheduled in chronological sequence so that, in every one of them, we would be continuing on to the following year. Now, though, a lot of people appear worried since they are altering their plans to schedule the game during the same time as the HBO show.
Although the HBO series is set in the same timeline as Hogwarts Legacy, fans also understand that this game will affect the lore or set things up for the future, influencing the series' narrative. This apparently points the finger at Warner Brothers' greed, as, believe it or not, it was rumored that the next Hogwarts Legacy game would have live service elements.
This was a major strategy before this dramatic shift took place in October 2024, when David Haddad mentioned that they had canceled many projects and put many on the back burner as they focused on the four main profitable IPs: Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, and Batman, along with the other DC Universe characters.
They are obviously once more focused on single-player games, but they will probably try to include some live service components here and there. Though initially it was presented as a single-player title, it won't be to the dramatic magnitude of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League with that game's live service element.
Though David Haddad mentioned organizing narratives with the forthcoming Harry Potter HBO series, we assume the game will expand on Harry Potter's legacy. That's the kind of narrative we will see mentioned in Hogwarts Legacy 2 and referenced back in the HBO series. We do not think he means having it set during the same period.
Since both TV and games get delayed year after year, it's going to be quite difficult, near impossible, to have the game take place in the same time period and have a crossover between the HBO series and stories. This would definitely restrict Avalanche Studios in their creative storytelling process. We must understand that the HBO series cannot be side by side with the game. There may be small stories they wish to share or a main quest they cannot fulfill since it would contradict the show's plot. Hence, it wouldn't make sense for the game to feature such a similar plot during the same era.
Now, perhaps we could see an ancestor of Tom Riddle or an ancestor of Dumbledore in the game, and then we see that same character in a portrait in Hogwarts or in someone's room in the show, but practically, just those little Easter eggs will be coordinated to really make the show and the game feel linked and a part of the same universe. These kinds of searches now most certainly lack options; for example, you wouldn't be able to let that dragon die as then it wouldn't make sense for those players to later see the dragon in the show.
Since these remarks, we have seen developments in the Warner Bros. Games. They are now only focusing on four franchises and are also going to license rights for studios that want to incorporate their franchises into their games. Warner Brothers Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfeld says that Hogwarts Legacy is one of the biggest priorities a couple of years down the road, even though Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was a terrible miss.
