Insomniac is Building a Massive Marvel Lineup With Wolverine, Venom, Spider-Man 3, and X-Men

From Marvel’s Wolverine in 2026 to a potential X-Men game in the 2030s, Insomniac’s reported pipeline points to a long-term PlayStation lineup built around Marvel and several possible new projects.

Insomniac Games has become one of PlayStation’s most valuable studios, and its upcoming lineup could keep the developer busy well into the PlayStation 6 generation. While some of the projects discussed around the studio remain based on reports, leaks, or older internal plans rather than official announcements, there is already a lot of information about where its development pipeline could be heading.

Marvel’s Wolverine is currently expected to arrive in 2026, giving Insomniac its next major release after Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The game is being developed as a third-person action-adventure title, with a structure that reportedly includes several semi-open-world areas rather than one continuous map.

One of the newer claims surrounding Wolverine is that the game will not receive a separate PC launch and will instead remain exclusive to PlayStation consoles.

The reported platform strategy would make it one of the games Sony is keeping focused on its console ecosystem, although the exact release plans remain subject to official confirmation. In addition to being Wolverine's standalone adventure, the game is also expected to help set up Insomniac's larger X-Men plans.

There is reportedly even a sequel clause connected to Wolverine that would give Insomniac the option to continue Logan's story if the first game performs well. That does not mean a sequel is guaranteed, but it would give the studio room to bring Wolverine back if there is a strong narrative reason to do so.

After Wolverine, Marvel’s Venom: Lethal Protector is reportedly positioned as another major project, potentially arriving around 2027. Despite previous rumors suggesting that the game had been canceled, multiple reports have continued to claim that it remains in development.

The confusion around Venom largely came from Insomniac's internal restructuring and the cancellation of planned Spider-Man 2 downloadable content. Since the studio stopped discussing that content and didn't publicly mention Venom, some assumed the project had been abandoned as well.

Venom could also serve as an important bridge between Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3. There are rumors that the game will feature three playable characters, but no official roster has been confirmed.

There’s also speculation that some of the material originally intended for Spider-Man 2’s Carnage DLC may have been folded into the Venom project, possibly allowing Insomniac to explore the symbiote storyline on a much larger scale.

Another big possibility is the late Tony Todd's unused Venom dialogue.

Todd voiced Venom in Spider-Man 2, but reports have claimed that only a small portion of his recorded dialogue was ultimately used. If the remaining material is available, some of it could potentially be used as part of the larger Venom project, alongside elements from the previously planned Life Foundation storyline.

That storyline was reportedly set to explore additional symbiotes and could have featured characters such as Lasher, Riot, Agony, and Phage. If those ideas have been carried into Venom, the game could provide significantly more room to explore the symbiote mythology than Spider-Man 2 was able to.

There is also the question of Knull, the symbiote god who Spider-Man 2 heavily teased. His symbol appeared alongside various symbiotes and the meteorite, indicating that Insomniac was setting up something beyond the events of that game.

Instead, Knull would likely require a much larger role if Insomniac decides to use him. That could mean making him the main antagonist of the Venom game, using the project to establish a future Venom sequel, or saving the character for another Spider-Man game or expansion.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 is reportedly planned for around 2028 or 2029 and could serve as the conclusion to the current Spider-Man trilogy. The game is expected to be developed for both PS5 and PS6, making it another cross-generation project during the transition between consoles.

Green Goblin is expected to be the primary antagonist, while other returning threats could include Doctor Octopus, Chameleon, Carnage, and Venom.

The game could also introduce or expand major character arcs involving Cindy Moon, who becomes Silk. Peter Parker is expected to return after his reduced role following Spider-Man 2, while Miles Morales could take on a more mature position after spending more time protecting New York on his own.

Venom could also return as a playable character in Spider-Man 3 if the events of Lethal Protector lead directly into the trilogy's conclusion. Eddie Brock's involvement could allow Insomniac to bring the character into specific missions alongside Peter and Miles, potentially putting the three characters against Green Goblin and the other threats.

Post-launch support could be especially important for Spider-Man 3 because Spider-Man 2's planned DLC was canceled. The sequel was reportedly set to receive additional content, but Insomniac's changing priorities eventually led to that material being abandoned.

With Spider-Man 3 potentially serving as the end of the current trilogy, Insomniac could have more reason to include additional story content and give several characters their own conclusions.

Spider-Man 3 could also establish the next generation of spin-offs. Miles Morales, Venom, and Silk are all characters who could potentially carry standalone games, while other Spider characters could also be introduced.

The biggest project beyond the Spider-Man lineup is reportedly Marvel's X-Men.

The game is expected to arrive in the early 2030s and has been described as an Avengers-level project for Insomniac's Marvel universe. Internal documents reportedly placed it as a follow-up to Wolverine, while Insomniac's Marvel agreement is said to extend through 2035.

The X-Men game could feature Wolverine alongside Jean Grey, Mystique, Cyclops, and Professor X, with characters such as Gambit, Rogue, Angel, Storm, and Magneto also being potential additions. It’s said to be a story-driven single-player game with multiple playable characters, not just one character like Wolverine.

A flexible character system could also add more replay value to the game. Insomniac could use fixed characters for major story missions while allowing players to choose different X-Men for side content, or it could build missions around teams that change depending on the situation.

The timing could also work well with Marvel's broader plans. By the time Insomniac's X-Men game arrives, Marvel Studios is expected to be heavily focused on its own X-Men storyline, potentially giving the characters even more attention across movies and television.

Insomniac's older roadmap also contained several projects beyond X-Men, including a Ratchet & Clank title that was once scheduled for 2029. That game was reportedly removed from the lineup, but the franchise remains an important part of PlayStation's identity.

There was also reportedly a slot for another X-Men-related project around 2033.

That could have represented a Wolverine sequel, an X-Men spin-off, or a standalone adventure for characters such as Cyclops, Storm, Magneto, or Jean Grey. The 2033 date comes from an older roadmap, so it should not be treated as a confirmed release window, but it does show how far Insomniac's Marvel plans may have extended.

The same roadmap reportedly included two projects simply labeled as new IP. Those could eventually become completely original franchises, additional Marvel spin-offs, or projects involving characters outside Spider-Man and X-Men.

Daredevil has been discussed as one possibility because Spider-Man 2 contains direct references establishing his existence in Insomniac's universe, although reports about a potential Daredevil game have not been confirmed by the studio.

Spider-Man 3 Peter shooting his webs

A Daredevil project could also make practical sense from a development perspective because Insomniac could potentially reuse parts of its existing New York assets. A similar approach was used with Miles Morales, which built on the foundation established by the original Spider-Man.

Doctor Strange is another possible direction, although a game centered around his magic would require Insomniac to develop a very different combat and traversal system.

The studio has also reportedly considered multiplayer projects in the past, including multiplayer elements for Spider-Man, Wolverine, and X-Men. The canceled Marvel's Spider-Man: The Great Web was the biggest example, but Sony's shift away from live-service games eventually brought that project to an end.

For now, the clearest part of Insomniac's future is its growing focus on major Marvel franchises. Wolverine is expected to lead the next stage in 2026, followed by a reported Venom project and eventually Spider-Man 3, while the X-Men game could carry the studio deep into the 2030s.

Much of the longer-term roadmap remains unconfirmed, and older leaked plans have already changed. Still, the overall direction is becoming easier to understand, with Insomniac positioned to remain one of PlayStation's biggest first-party developers for years to come.
