A new Steam client update brings changes across Steam Deck, Steam Machine, desktop mode, friends and chat, Steam Input, and Remote Play. The update also addresses cloud synchronization behavior and adds new streaming support for Steam Deck OLED. Steam has also added an option to choose which account to use at startup.

Cloud synchronization has been an issue when moving between devices. Sometimes it may appear that a cloud save has finished when it has not, which can cause problems when transferring from a Steam Deck to a Steam Machine. With the new behavior, Steam waits for the cloud sync to finish before shutting down.

Steam Client Update Adds Account and Cloud Sync Changes

The update also brings changes to desktop mode, friends and chat, and Steam Input. In desktop mode, Steam fixed an issue where some keys didn't type properly in the Steam overlay. For friends and chat, messages containing suspicious content will now be flagged in group chats. Steam Input also receives a change to controller configurations.

Controller configurations shared with other devices are now more clearly identified as unique to specific devices within the configuration interface. Remote Play receives several changes in the new Steam client update. Video color range has improved, and Steam Deck OLED now supports HDR streaming.

For setups that include both a Steam Machine and a Steam Deck, these changes could make Remote Play more useful. HDR streaming on the Steam Deck OLED and AV1 support give the feature more options for streaming games between devices.

The update also adds AV1 video streaming support when using the experimental Steam RT 3 Steam client.

The Remote Play changes also include more fixes. Further testing should show how these improvements perform in real use. One thing to keep in mind: the update currently breaks Decky Loader. If you use Decky Loader on a Steam Deck, consider this compatibility issue before installing the update.

Overall, the new Steam client update focuses on account management, cloud synchronization, Steam Input, and Remote Play, with HDR streaming for the Steam Deck OLED and AV1 streaming support among the changes.
