Insomniac’s Next Decade of Marvel Games is Starting to Take Shape for 2027 Release

Wolverine, Venom, Spider-Man 3, and even an X-Men universe could be part of PlayStation’s long-term strategy heading into the PS6 era.

It's not taking long for Insomniac Games to become the studio that PlayStation wants to reach its biggest goals. Given how well the Spider-Man games have done, the studio that created them now seems to be working on something much bigger: a series of interconnected Marvel games that could span deep into the next generation of consoles.

Marvel’s Wolverine will remain Insomniac’s next big release, which is still on track for 2026. Sony has yet to reveal much gaming to the public, but more details about the project continue to emerge. Wolverine is a third-person action adventure game with more open spaces to explore and a darker tone than the studio’s Spider-Man games.

The game is also being pitched as more than just a superhero story. Wolverine will help lay the groundwork for Insomniac’s future X-Men world, which could become a big deal for PlayStation in the 2030s. A lot of well-known X-Men characters and bad guys are said to be in the project, which suggests that Logan's story may have a clear link to bigger crossover plans in the future.

Platform strategy is another interesting fact. Sony may not be planning a separate PC version for Wolverine anymore. Instead, they may decide to keep the game exclusively for PlayStation hardware for the time being. If this is true, it would be a big change from how Sony has been recently, bringing a number of first-party games to PC after they came out.

However, Wolverine is only a small part of what looks like a much bigger plan.

Earlier rumors claimed the project was cancelled, but Marvel’s Venom is still in the works. The game’s scope just got bigger after Insomniac went through a lot of changes and planned changes to Spider-Man 2 after its release. That may be why the planned DLC for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 went without a trace. Some canceled story ideas, such as ones related to Carnage and bigger symbiote stories, may have been merged straight into the stand-alone Venom project instead.

It is now being said that the Venom game will connect Spider-Man 2 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, which will release at some point. Leaks suggest that many playable characters, including Peter Parker, Yuri Watanabe, and Venom himself, may make an appearance in the game.

There is also more and more talk about speech recordings from the late Tony Todd that have not been used. Sources say that only a small part of his recorded speech made it into Spider-Man 2. This has led many fans to think that the rest of it might show up in the standalone Venom game.

Knull, the symbiote god who was highly hinted at in Spider-Man 2, is a name that keeps coming up in all of these projects. Reports say that Insomniac may be keeping the character for a much bigger part later in the series instead of using him as a minor bad guy. It's still not clear if Knull will be in Venom, Spider-Man 3, or another future project, but the character's world seems far from finished.

Spider-Man 3 is going to be Insomniac's biggest Marvel project yet.

The game will likely come out between 2028 and 2029, and it may be released as a cross-generation title for both the PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 6. Inside the studio, the sequel is said to be seen as the main ending to the current Spider-Man plot.

There will be a lot of familiar villains there, like the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Carnage and Chameleon. Cindy Moon's character Silk could become a major playable character, along with Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Venom may also come back for some tasks or parts of the story.

Insomniac is said to plan to support Spider-Man 3 with features after the game releases, unlike Spider-Man 2. The studio's long-term approach to the trilogy finale may have been affected by how disappointed fans were when DLC plans for the previous game were dropped.

Reports keep pointing to a bigger X-Men project for the early 2030s, besides Spider-Man and Venom. The rumored game is said to have story-driven missions, multiple playable mutants, and bigger team mechanics with Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Mystique, and Professor X.

While this is going on, rumors about completely new projects have only grown stronger. Older Insomniac roadmaps talked about mysterious "new IP" slots that could be for totally new franchises, more Marvel heroes, or even the return of old PlayStation games like Ratchet & Clank and Infamous. There have also been more rumors about projects involving Daredevil and Doctor Strange, especially since Spider-Man 2 made nods to those characters.

It's still early for many of these projects, and plans could change at any time. But one thing is becoming clearer: Insomniac isn't just making one character game at a time anymore. It looks like the studio is making a whole Marvel gaming world for PlayStation.

Now, the bigger question is whether Insomniac can keep raising the bar without becoming the studio that is expected to carry a whole generation of PlayStation games by itself.
