Konami Dumps Fox Engine For Unreal 5

PES and other franchises will use Epic’s Engine

Konami recently announced that Pro Evolution Soccer 2022 will be their first title to utilize Epic’s Unreal Engine 5. This marks an end of an era, as the franchise had been using the Fox Engine ever since PES 2013. This decision makes perfect business sense, as Unreal Engine 5 is touted as being very compatible with games developed for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Fox Engine was first created by Kojima Productions for use in Metal Gear titles. However, it went on to be a staple of Pro Evolution Soccer, and was even used in P.T. the demo for a prospective Silent Hill reboot. However, after Hideo Kojima was let go from Konami in 2015, Kojima Productions was spun off as its own independent company. With a lack of the original designers and engineers, it is no surprise that Konami eventually sunsetted the Fox Engine. It is likely very cost effective to license from Epic Games rather than maintain proprietary software.
