A new leak surrounding Star Wars Jedi 3 is giving fans plenty to talk about, and it could mean the next chapter of Cal Kestis' story arrives much sooner than many expected. According to information shared during a recent Insider, the next game will reportedly show Cal noticeably older due to a time jump.

While details remain limited, the report has already sparked speculation about where the game could fit within the wider Star Wars timeline. It has also fueled talk that a reveal could happen during Summer Game Fest rather than sometime next year. That alone has been enough to generate significant excitement among fans.

The idea of Cal aging between games is nothing new, but the scale of this rumored jump is what makes it interesting. Cal was 18 years old during the events of Jedi: Fallen Order and 23 years old in Jedi: Survivor, creating a five-year gap between the first two titles. This latest report, however, suggests Respawn may be planning something more substantial.

Instead of another modest jump forward, you could be seeing a version of Cal who has spent many more years surviving under Imperial rule and gaining experience as a Jedi. Such a shift could give Respawn the chance to explore a more mature, battle-hardened version of the character than players have seen before.

If that’s the case, the timeline implications are much more significant.

Jedi: Survivor takes place in 9 BBY, about nine years before the Battle of Yavin. Jedi 3 would take place approximately 4 BBY, a five-year jump, putting it around the time leading up to A New Hope. A larger jump could move the story even closer to the original trilogy era and potentially into the timeframe surrounding The Empire Strikes Back.

That possibility is where much of the excitement comes from. An older Cal operating during one of the most recognizable periods in Star Wars history could create opportunities for connections to characters and events fans already know. It would also bring his story closer to some of the most significant events in the timeline of the franchise.

You could see him working alongside elements of the Rebel Alliance or finding himself involved in conflicts that overlap with the larger galactic struggle. It would also place him much closer to figures like Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa than ever before.

At the same time, bringing Cal into that part of the timeline raises an important creative challenge.

The Jedi games have largely succeeded because Cal's story has remained his own. While Respawn has included familiar Star Wars characters throughout the series, those appearances have generally supported the narrative rather than overtaking it. One of the most significant calls the studio will probably have to make is the balance between respecting the larger universe and keeping Cal the focus of the story.

There’s a strong case to be made for allowing Cal to interact with some of the bigger names of the original trilogy. Handled delicately, those moments could yield meaningful development without making the character a supporting player in someone else’s story. Minor but meaningful interactions could serve to connect the series to the greater Star Wars universe but keep the focus on Cal’s personal journey.

Respawn has earned a fair amount of trust in this area through the first two games. The studio has shown a willingness to incorporate established Star Wars lore without relying on constant fan service. Because of that track record, we have reason to believe that any larger connections would enhance the story rather than distract from it. If Jedi 3 truly is the final chapter, the developers will likely want those moments to feel earned.

Beyond the timeline discussion, fans also hope to see several gameplay features expanded.

One of the more common requests is for players to have more agency over Cal’s character arc. So far, the games have been mostly linear, but a final game might allow for choices that impact the outcome of Cal’s story. Whether those are choices involving the light side, dark side, or somewhere in the middle, it would add another layer to the characters' development.

The concept ties in well with some themes already set in the series. And as Cal gets older, those struggles may become all the more important. Throughout the series, Cal has faced several situations that have tested his emotions and beliefs. Those experiences may have a greater effect on his decisions going forward.

Allowing players to shape aspects of his future would create a different type of ending while still preserving the overall story. Even if Respawn chooses to remain fully linear, the concept remains one of the more compelling possibilities for the sequel.

Another area where many expect improvements is exploration. Jedi: Survivor really opened up its worlds quite a bit, with larger areas packed with secrets, side content, and optional stuff. The next game could take it to another level by giving you bigger locations with more meaningful things to find.

More combat options are also high on the wish list. More lightsaber stances, expanded Force powers, and more customization systems could all help in making Cal feel more seasoned as a Jedi. Even smaller features, like the return of fan-favorite cosmetic options, are popular requests.

Yet there is one major problem that still looms over the project, despite the excitement surrounding the leak. Jedi: Survivor launched with serious tech problems that affected players on several platforms. Frame rate issues, stuttering, crashes, and optimization issues became some of the biggest talking points around the game.

That is why performance will likely be one of the most closely watched aspects of Jedi 3.

Expectations are much higher now, and another troubled launch would almost certainly face harsher criticism. Many players would rather see Respawn spend additional months polishing the game than rush it out before it is ready. If this installment is truly the conclusion to Cal's trilogy, a stable and optimized release feels essential.

The leak has also sparked discussion about when the game could finally be revealed. Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson suggested that a reveal during Summer Game Fest is a possibility, which would place it well ahead of some expectations. Many assumed Respawn would wait until a future Star Wars Celebration event before officially unveiling the project.

As for a release date, estimates remain speculative. Development has likely been ongoing for several years following the launch of Jedi: Survivor, but no official timeline has been announced. If a reveal happens this year, a launch sometime in 2027 appears realistic. If the announcement comes later, the release window could easily stretch into late 2027 or even 2028.

Regardless of when the game arrives, interest in Star Wars Jedi 3 continues to grow. The possibility of an older Cal Kestis, a larger time jump, and stronger connections to the original trilogy has given fans plenty to think about. If the rumors are true, the next game may be the most ambitious and important chapter yet in Cal’s journey.
