After months of mystery surrounding Legacy of Atlantis, Tomb Raider fans may finally get some clarity. According to studios connected to the project, the game is still on track for a 2026 release, despite rumors that it had quietly slipped into 2027. Those concerns gained momentum over the last few months as official updates remained limited.

As a result, many people began questioning whether development had run into problems or whether the game's reveal plans had changed. The lack of official updates only fueled further speculation as fans searched for clues about the project's status. Rumors continued to spread across the community.

Instead, current reports point in a very different direction. Legacy of Atlantis is now reportedly set to receive its first major showcase during Summer Game Fest on June 5. Support studio Electric Square has publicly confirmed its involvement alongside Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, while continuing to list the project with a 2026 release window.

The project is drawing attention because Crystal Dynamics is no longer describing it as a simple remake.

The studio has repeatedly referred to Legacy of Atlantis as a reimagining, which suggests a much broader approach to revisiting the original game. The team appears to be broadening their exploration past the visual upgrades, with new activities and more content being added along the way of the adventure.

From what has been discussed so far, it seems that the goal is to do something bigger than a traditional remake while still honoring the foundation of the original release. Instead of simply recreating familiar moments, the project appears focused on expanding them with new ideas, deeper exploration, and additional context.

Tomb Raider debuted in 1996 and helped establish many of the ideas that would define the action-adventure genre for years to come. It brought Lara Croft into the homes of gamers worldwide and became one of the most influential games in gaming history. At the same time, the technological limitations of its era shaped its design.

Legacy of Atlantis appears to be taking advantage of that difference. The core story remains in place, Lara Croft's first adventure remains the centerpiece, and many of the original locations are expected to return. But the spaces between those familiar moments seem to be growing quite a bit larger.

Crystal Dynamics has discussed the idea of turning locations that were mostly background scenery into fully explorable areas with more to discover and do. That approach could make familiar environments feel much larger and more meaningful than they did in the original game. Therefore enhancing the gaming experience.

That change could have a big impact on how the adventure plays out. Areas used to be limited by hardware limitations, but now they can be expanded into larger spaces with hidden pathways, environmental storytelling, and optional content. Not only could you find yourself back in familiar places with a fresh coat of paint, but also actually venturing into brand new parts of those areas.

Atlantis itself appears to be receiving a much larger role in the overall experience. Players who remember the original game will likely recall how dramatically the story changed once Atlantis entered the picture. The adventure shifted away from traditional archaeology and moved into something far stranger and more mysterious.

This time, Atlantis may become far more than a late-game destination.

Now Crystal Dynamics has the chance to explore its history, culture, technology, and demise in greater depth than ever before. More specific locations, more extensive ruins, and added narrative elements could be used to make Atlantis a focal point of the story, rather than just a location for the last stages of the adventure.

The studio’s recent Tomb Raider games offer some clues as to how that approach could work. Over the last decade, Crystal Dynamics has been big on rewarding exploration, with optional tombs and hidden lore and environmental clues. Those features have become defining parts of modern Tomb Raider design.

Bringing that philosophy into Lara's first adventure could significantly increase the sense of discovery that originally made the franchise so popular. By expanding optional exploration opportunities and filling the world with more secrets, environmental storytelling, and hidden points of interest, we can enhance the overall experience.

Combat is also expected to receive substantial updates. Comments from developers at Flying Wild Hog suggest the team wants encounters to feel challenging because of enemy behavior and mechanics rather than because information is hidden from players. One developer even cited Elden Ring’s approach to encounter design as an example of how games can communicate threats clearly while still being difficult.

That philosophy fits naturally with the identity of Tomb Raider. Historically the series has rewarded players who learn their environment rather than just relying on brute force. Whether you are solving puzzles, navigating dangerous environments, or fighting enemies, success often comes from paying attention to the situation around you.

Legacy of Atlantis seems to be going in a direction of reinforcing those strengths, not away from them. The updates mentioned so far seem to be more in the spirit of building upon the core identity of the series rather than replacing it with an entirely different style of gameplay. That should reassure longtime fans.

Unreal Engine 5 could also help to reimagine some of the game’s most iconic locations. You can now display ancient temples, underground caverns, and dense jungle environments on a much larger scale than ever before. Improvements to lighting, environmental detail, and atmosphere can dramatically change how these familiar places feel.

That commitment may ultimately be one of the project's biggest strengths. Tomb Raider has never defined itself solely by combat. Exploration, discovery, and the excitement of finding forgotten places were the hallmarks of the series. Crystal Dynamics has the tools to enhance those elements without losing the identity that made the franchise successful to begin with.

The timing may also work in the game's favor.

Exploration-driven adventures have seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, with games such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle proving that there is still a substantial audience for the genre. The Tomb Raider remasters were successful, but Uncharted remains one of Sony’s biggest franchises.

Legacy of Atlantis may also represent the beginning of a larger return for the franchise. Crystal Dynamics is reportedly developing Tomb Raider: Catalyst alongside this project, with the new mainline entry currently targeting a 2027 release window. Together, the two projects could mark the start of a much broader effort to re-establish Tomb Raider as one of gaming's major adventure franchises.

If these plans are realized, Legacy of Atlantis could be a celebration of the series’ past and a bridge to its future. It would give longtime fans a new take on a classic adventure while introducing newer players to one of gaming's most important stories. It could also help build momentum for whatever comes next.

For now, the overall confidence surrounding the project remains high. Multiple studios are openly discussing their involvement, support teams are publicly attached to development, and insiders are continuing to point toward a major reveal in early June. All signs suggest the project is moving into the stage where developers are finally ready to show players what they have been building.

Based on everything that has emerged so far, Crystal Dynamics appears to be aiming for more than a simple visual upgrade. The studio seems focused on expanding the original adventure, modernizing gameplay systems, and giving its most iconic locations and story moments far more room to grow. If that vision comes together successfully, Legacy of Atlantis could deliver the kind of large-scale reimagining that many Tomb Raider fans have been hoping to see for years.
