CULTIC: Chapter Two Review

A bloody brilliant return to old-school horror.

So here we are, finally, with CULTIC: Chapter Two. It's been three years since the first chapter arrived and left people buzzing about this small indie boomer shooter that somehow felt both nostalgic and fresh as hell. Back then, it grabbed my attention by mixing that retro Blood vibe with a layer of RE4-style survival horror mechanics.
But now that Chapter Two has dropped, the big question is whether it keeps that momentum or gets swallowed up in a market that's full of retro-inspired shooters. Let me cut to the chase—it's even better than I hoped. If Chapter One was the warm-up, Chapter Two is the full sprint into madness.

The story picks up right where Chapter One left off, carrying you through an interlude map before pushing deeper into the horrors of Chapter Two. It feels like walking through a half-decayed nightmare, with just enough hints to keep you guessing without overwhelming the action.
There is certainly much to be said about how CULTIC: Chapter Two builds its environment. It doesn't hit you over the head with lore dumps, but if you prefer to go over notes and background information, it's there. Environmental storytelling makes the fear much worse. One bloody breadcrumb at a time, you seem to be putting together the cult's twisted past. It's optional, but it makes the world feel lived in.
The horror roots of this game run deep. It's not just blood and gore for shock value—it's the tension, the way a locked door makes you sweat because you know you'll have to descend deeper into god-knows-what to find a key. It's the crunch of footsteps on wood or the flicker of shadows in dim light that gets under your skin. The fact that it manages to do that while still being a blast of a shooter is kind of ridiculous.
One of the coolest moves the devs made before launch was sneaking a 2.0 update into Chapter 1, bringing all of Chapter Two's core features into the original release. That way, players who hadn't touched the game in years got a taste of what was coming. And honestly, the first thing that stood out to me wasn't even the new guns or enemies; it was just how much smoother the damn game ran. Back then, it felt rough around the edges.
Now it's stable and slick. Stability isn't sexy, I know, but in a game that throws this much chaos at you, it makes all the difference. But let's talk about the heart of CULTIC: Chapter Two: atmosphere. You're crawling through tight corridors, flicking on your little lighter or flashlight while whispering a prayer you won't round a corner and bump into one of those grotesque bastards waiting for you in the dark.

The combat is as crunchy as ever. Guns feel weighty as always, and enemies react with the kind of feedback that makes every shot boom. Alas, who could forget the dynamite—oh man, the dynamite. Few things in gaming are as consistently fun as tossing dynamite into a room and hearing that boom as limbs scatter like confetti. Dynamite is part of the strategy. Sometimes it's your best tool for crowd control; sometimes it's the only way you're going to survive.
Man, I can't overstate just how good the combat feels. There's a reason people keep talking about this game's arsenal. Every weapon has personality, whether it's the crack of a rifle shot echoing through a cavern or the spray of a shotgun blast obliterating a charging cultist. You're not just firing numbers at health bars. You are watching enemies crumble.
That level of feedback is something a lot of modern boomer shooters have missed. CULTIC: Chapter Two doesn't care about being clean; it cares about being fun. What really sells it, though, is the pacing. Too many shooters fall into the trap of constant noise with wave after wave of enemies until you're numb. CULTIC: Chapter Two knows when to slow down.
It gives you those quiet moments to catch your breath, to dread what's waiting around the next corner. Then it rips the floor out from under you with a brutal arena fight that forces you to use every trick you've got up your sleeve. Chapter 2 doesn't just go over what the first chapter did.
It feels bigger and nastier. The environments open up more, shifting from claustrophobic horror to battlefields where cover matters and the enemy variety really shines. The cultists are still creepy as hell, but now you're also up against twisted things that look like they crawled straight out of some Stephen King novel.

One fight in particular had me cursing under my breath as I unloaded clip after clip into a towering giant that just refused to stay down. When it finally died, I sat back in my chair like I'd just run a marathon. That's the magic of this game.
And the main idea here is survival. You may not always have ammo, and your health may go down quicker than you think. The game always finds a way to change the environment around you, even when you believe you're secure. But it's not unjust. That's the line that CULTIC walks so beautifully. It's all about being resourceful. You feel like a genius when you get it right. If you mess up, you know it's your fault, not the game.
The visuals, while still embracing that retro aesthetic, have been polished. Lighting feels moodier, and the environments just have more character. There's this balance between pixelated grain and modern polish that hits the sweet spot. That identity is equal parts old-school shooter and survival horror fever dream.
I'll admit, Chapter Two isn't going to be for everyone. If you bounced off Chapter One because the difficulty felt punishing or the aesthetic didn't click, this won't magically change your mind. But if you were even remotely intrigued before, this second chapter takes everything that worked and doubles down.
It's more intense, more varied, and more confident in what it wants to be. There were moments where I thought, "Damn, this might be one of the best boomer shooters in years." And honestly, I still feel that way writing this.
Of course, there are some rough edges. Enemy AI can be buggy, a few textures might look a little muddy, and yeah, sometimes the game's difficulty spike makes you want to hurl your mouse across the room. The truth is, those problems never got in the way of the good times.
When I finished Chapter Two, I was both tired and grinning like a crazy person. It's the type of game that makes you tired yet makes you want to play again. It satisfies that old-school desire while yet seeming current in all the right ways. In a sea of retro shooters, this one stands tall, bloodied dynamite in hand, daring anyone to top it.
CULTIC: Chapter Two is worth your time. If you've got even a shred of love for the boomer shooter genre, this is the one. It's creepy, it's brutal, and it's stylish as hell, a perfect homage to the RE franchise. Three years was a long wait, but it was worth every second.
