Hot Wheels Let's Race: Ultimate Speed is a wild arcade racer that revives the classic toy cars in a way that is just one word: fun. Building on the long history of Hot Wheels in video games, this game was created by Bamtang Games, a company well-known for their reliable work on mascot kart racers with Dreamworks themes, and released by GameMill Entertainment.

Although it isn't a direct sequel, it obviously draws inspiration from earlier Hot Wheels games, such as Hot Wheels Unleashed and Hot Wheels Monster Trucks: Stunt Mayhem. Fans can expect the brand's distinctive toy designs to be combined with the lively music, which I'll talk more about later.

The game is also based on the 2024 Netflix animated series Hot Wheels Let's Race, which follows six young racers at the Hot Wheels Ultimate Garage Racing Camp as they try to become the next big thing in racing

The show's characters—Mac, Brights, Coop, Spark, Axle, and Cruise—are all present in the game, designed to capture the Saturday-morning cartoon vibe, which gives the title a lively personality from the very first race. Even if you haven't seen the series, the energy and humor of these characters slot seamlessly into the gameplay.

There's no narrative if you were looking for one because you're not playing an arcade racer for its story now, are you? Anyhoo, each racer brings their own unique stats and strengths to the table. Mac, Coop, Axle, and Cruise boast higher speed but lower handling, while Brights and Spark handle better but are slightly slower. Pairing the right character with the right vehicle becomes part of the strategy, especially when tackling tricky corners or looping tracks.

You get to drive across enormous Hot Wheels tracks in midair after selecting one of the many Hot Wheels cars available.

Gameplay in Hot Wheels Let's Race: Ultimate Speed is pure arcade fun. The driving mechanics are snappy, sometimes twitchy, but perfectly in line with a game aimed at iPad kids. The generous walls and tractor-beam-style track boundaries make it nearly impossible to fall off, which makes it easier for kids while still offering the thrill of high-speed loops, jumps, and tricks.

Drifting around corners grants a boost, and strategically using boost pads, special abilities, and the occasional obstacle can create moments of chaos. Boss battles appear from time to time, pitting players against giant serpents or fire-breathing dragons, and while they are simple in execution, they tie in nicely with the source material.

Each encounter is more about kiddy fun than challenge, but landing that last hit or dodging a massive attack brings a small thrill and a short speed boost. Game modes are a lot to talk about, so let's break them down bit by bit.

Racing Camp is the main hub, and it has 12 tracks spread out over several cups. The first three are Downtown Dash, Moonlight Madness, and Champion's Circuit. As you move up, you will also unlock Golden Wheel, Rookie Builder, and Master Builder.

Modes include Cup Champ, a grand prix-style challenge where you compete for Flame Badges; Free Race, which allows for casual play; and Speed Trials, which, as the name suggests, focuses on speed as you complete tracks in record time.

Local multiplayer supports up to four players on a single screen, fostering couch-potato-based rivalry and co-op chaos.

The Track Builder is one of the best features, in my opinion. It begins with a guided tutorial that teaches you how to place loops, ramps, twists, and turns. The grid-based editor allows customization, and while the game automatically fills in connecting pieces, there is still a surprising amount of freedom.

You can make your own tracks that look like roller coasters and save up to eight of them for local races. Building Challenges are structured puzzles that let you show off your Hot Wheels in hot-diggity-dog fashion by making fun and useful tracks.

This mode not only makes the game more fun to play again, but it also encourages younger players to try out different designs, making it both fun and educational. With all this customization available, when you own the game, you OWN the game.

We can't possibly talk about Hot Wheels Let's Race: Ultimate Speed without the cars in the game. Every car has its own distinct style and abilities, from the GT-Scorcher and Roger Dodger to zany creations like Duck N' Roll. Decals add to customization, granting perks like longer drift boosts or extended speed bursts. So, just mix and match and find out what suits you best in-game would be my suggestion.

While the gameplay shines, the game isn't without its quirks. The handling can feel a bit off at times, and physics may behave unexpectedly, particularly when transitioning from walls or taking sharp turns at speed. Difficulty is extremely low (makes sense because it is a kids' game after all), even at higher speeds or AI settings, which may frustrate you if you want a proper racing sim.

Time trials can be completed in a single attempt, and even races at ultra speed rarely punish mistakes harshly.

Nevertheless, the accessible gameplay ensures that the youngins can enjoy themselves without stress, and the multiplayer options provide plenty of fun with family or friends. There's no online play, which is a missed opportunity, but the split-screen action is more than sufficient for in-person fun.

Progression is easy. You can get new cars, decals, and track pieces by winning races and finishing cups. You can find the best combinations by trying out different characters and vehicles. During the race, you can choose how to use each car's special ability, like speeding up, blowing up opponents, or making a wave that drives itself.

That's just to name a few, though, I urge you to see out the rest for yourself, because yes, this may be a kids' game, but if you do want to turn back the clock, then check the game out yourself. The show's theme song and a lively menu with several modes and customization choices greet you as soon as you land on the title screen.

The game's visuals are a feast of color and brightness, embracing the exaggerated designs and neon-orange classic Hot Wheels tracks. From moonlit circuits to city streets, every setting seems alive, and every track is chaos to the power of infinity. You name it: loops, corkscrews, and over-the-top set pieces. Check, check, check, and check.

Vehicles look playful and faithful to both the toy line and the animated series, and the cutscenes, while brief and sometimes lightly voiced, do a decent job of conveying the characters' personalities. The sound design complements the visual energy perfectly, with upbeat music and revving engines.

In the end, Hot Wheels Let's Race: Ultimate Speed isn't a complex or difficult racing simulation, but it doesn't have to be. Its accessibility and outrageous songs are what make it so appealing. It is a lighthearted homage to the Netflix series and the Hot Wheels brand.

It's a game that invites adults to partake in a few laps of chaos, parents to join in the fun, and kids to enjoy high-speed mayhem. Its limitations—low difficulty, physics, and lack of online multiplayer—are minor concerns in the face of pure, colorful, loop-filled fun.

For $39.99, it offers an energetic racing experience that is perfect for a fun weekend with the fam. Hot Wheels fans of any age will find plenty to love in this rollercoaster of a racer, from the array of cars to the boss battles. This game's not trying to be the next NASCAR or F1 in terms of racing, but it's a simple, well-executed project that's got a lot of passion.
