With decades of storytelling in books, movies, and video games, the Starship Troopers universe has always been a rich source for adaptations. The most well-known version of the franchise is still Paul Verhoeven's 1997 film, but it has influenced everything from the insectoid Zerg in StarCraft to the Tyranids in Warhammer 40,000 and, more recently, games like Helldivers 2 that use the same satirical, military tone.
With this legacy in mind, Auroch Digital, the studio behind the boomer shooter Warhammer 40,000: Bolt Gun, has brought the universe into interactive chaos with Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War!. Unlike many modern shooters, this game is unapologetically retro in style, leaning into both nostalgic combat mechanics and in-universe storytelling that feels more like propaganda than entertainment.

Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! looks like a recruitment tool for the Federation, set in the universe itself. You are Major Samantha Dietz, and you have to complete a series of missions that are both fun and educational. The story is not as important as the gameplay, but it is fully realized through FMV cutscenes with real actors, propaganda reels, and over-the-top melodrama that reminds me of old action movies.
Every mission has a purpose. For example, in human campaigns, you lead troops against bugs that never stop attacking, and in bug missions, you play as an assassin-type arachnid, which adds to the satirical and meta-narrative tone. The Federation's propaganda is front and center, telling a story that is part parody, part fan service, and completely charming for fans of the franchise.
Characters and Marines say lines right from the movie, and famous battles like Klendathu and Zegema Beach are faithfully recreated. This makes fans feel like they're in the movie, brings back memories, and keeps the game fun.
The campaign alternates between human and bug missions to maintain a balance of intensity and cathartic power fantasy.
In human missions, you have to protect objectives, escort squads, or take out special enemies like tankers, archers, and centurions. Each kind of enemy needs a different plan to encounter. You can kill standard warrior bugs with a fair number of bullets, but you need to manage your resources and use your weapons wisely against specialized enemies.
In contrast, bug missions let you change into different forms, fly, and scare human outposts in a power-fantasy loop that feels different from the main human combat. These parts are easier to play, but they add variety by focusing on the Federation's propaganda theme and letting you destroy things in a different role.
The fighting in Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! is based on chaos, speed, and managing resources. You can't heal or regenerate shields, so you have to always manage pickups or call in supply drops to stay alive. The player's main loadout consists of two weapons. The third slot is for special weapons like airstrikes, high-powered explosives, or sniper rifles.

This system creates a constant tension between saving your special weapons for a more formidable threat and using them immediately to survive against overwhelming hordes.
There are a lot of different weapons to choose from, including Marita assault rifles with under-barrel shotguns, sniper rifles, burst-fire weapons, and shotguns. The sound design, visual feedback, and one-shot potential against normal enemies make them even more fun to use. Turrets, mech suits, and destructible walls are other environmental tools that make combat more interesting by giving you different ways to deal with enemies and control the battlefield.
Having different varieties of enemies is always stressful. You have to deal with swarms of melee attackers like warrior bugs and aphids, archers who shoot from afar, and heavily armored tankers or centurions that require tactical play and ammo management. These fights can get out of hand, especially on bigger, more open maps where multiple goals are active at the same time.
The AI is always moving, so if you stay still or take too long to stop, you'll often be surrounded by enemies. You need to move to stay alive, and sprinting drains your stamina bar. The fast stamina regeneration is a little annoying because it breaks up the rhythm every few seconds, but it feels like more of a challenge when you're moving through higher levels.
Puzzle-like mechanics are mostly found in bug missions.
In these missions, you have to break through human defenses, disable barriers, avoid AA cannons, or strategically take down turrets while keeping your swarm moving. These puzzles are not too hard, but they are different from the fast-paced firefights in the human campaign and help reinforce the two gameplay loops.
The game rewards skill and strategy indirectly: successfully navigating maps, efficiently managing resources, and maximizing damage output enable frequent airstrikes, ammo drops, or mech deployments, making the player’s actions feel impactful in both the micro and macro senses.

In Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War!, you level up by completing missions instead of mindlessly grinding for XP. Completing objectives will let you unlock more human and bug missions. Your combat skills also affect the resource systems that let you ask for help. This structure keeps the game interesting and makes you feel like you're always making progress, even when you play it again.
Most of the time, difficulty comes from controlling the crowd rather than from complicated mechanics. If you make a mistake in positioning or timing, you will fail quickly, which shows how important strategy and movement are over just shooting. There are four levels of difficulty, each changing the number of enemies and the level of challenge. There are no sliders or fine-tuning options, which keeps the system simple but useful.
The game's graphics mix low-fi 3D environments with 2D artwork to create a retro look that is both easy to read and cute.
Even in the middle of a fight, the character and bug models are easy to see. The battlefield is more interesting because the environments can be destroyed, and bugs can spawn. The semi-open level design lets players choose how to complete missions, whether by fighting enemies or running past swarms to reach important areas. This gives players control over how they complete each mission.
The game runs well on a mid- to high-end PC. For example, we tested it on an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X 3D CPU, 32 GB of DDR5 RAM, and a Radeon RX 7800 XT GPU, and it kept a solid frame rate of around 144 FPS. The performance on consoles stays the same, with stable framerates and few problems on PlayStation and Xbox.
However, load times vary slightly depending on the hardware. The game works well across different types of hardware, and its stylized graphics ensure that even lower-end machines can handle the action without sacrificing too much quality.
Sound design adds to the visual experience. Weapons sound powerful and heavy, making every shot, explosion, or melee strike feel like it has weight. The sounds of battle add to the chaotic energy of swarms, while FMV propaganda reels and voice lines give context, humor, and fan service.

Dialogue is occasionally inconsistent—switching abruptly between dramatic moments and casual banter—but this fits the universe's absurd, satirical tone. Music, ambient sounds, and effects from environmental hazards further immerse players in the Starship Troopers world, enhancing both tension and entertainment value.
Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! excels in delivering a chaotic, fun, and fan-focused experience.
Its strength lies in its pacing and dual gameplay loops, alternating between tense human combat and satisfying bug missions. Human missions have a lot of goals on big maps, and you often have to make tactical decisions to stay alive against hordes of enemies (as we said before).
Bug missions, on the other hand, are more like puzzles that require you to use your abilities in creative ways, which keeps the campaign interesting over time. Combat mechanics, weapon variety, environmental interactions, and the satisfaction of overcoming large-scale enemy swarms keep gameplay fresh and engaging.
While some aspects are less polished—the bug missions could be deeper, ammo scarcity occasionally conflicts with player expectations, and dialogue sometimes feels out of place—these issues don’t detract from the overall enjoyment.
In fact, they add to the game's chaotic, self-aware tone by reminding players that they are taking part in a propaganda simulation set in the game's universe. This retro shooter stands out because it has the right amount of challenge and fun, a mix of fan service and nostalgia, and satisfying combat loops.
If you've played Helldivers 2 or other old-school shooters, you'll recognize the gameplay mechanics, but they'll also be different. The focus will be on movement and smart resource use. There is a lot to love here for players who like to deal with big groups, try out different weapons, and use their skills in stressful situations.
The meta-narrative, along with the FMV cutscenes and clever references to the franchise, make the game more than just a simple corridor shooter. It gives it personality and context that fans of the universe will enjoy. In general, Auroch Digital has made a game that strikes a good balance between nostalgia, fun, and difficulty.

Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! is a good shooter that stands on its own and is a celebration of the franchise. It has a mix of crazy human missions, fun bug-power fantasies, FMV propaganda, and interesting combat loops that make it a fun game for both retro shooter and Starship Troopers fans. The game is easy to play on a lot of different platforms, and it runs well on PCs and consoles, so almost anyone can jump right into the action.
If you love the Starship Troopers universe, enjoy retro-inspired shooters, or just want a game that’s chaotic, satisfying, and packed with fan service, Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! delivers in spades. It is a game that knows exactly what it wants to be and executes it with energy, humor, and a playful sense of absurdity.
With its meta-narrative, FMV cutscenes, open-level designs, and satisfying combat, this game rewards players who are willing to try new things and love the franchise. The combination of strategic positioning, crowd control, a variety of weapons, and two gameplay loops makes sure that no two missions feel exactly the same. This keeps players interested through both intensity and catharsis in Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War!.
