AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT FSR4 Upscaling Review for Modern AAA 4K Games

RX 9070 XT 4K gaming performance overview focusing on image quality, upscaling behavior, and real-world results across modern titles.

With a 4K panel, the RX 9070 XT can run recent games, but there are still some things to consider. To minimise any CPU bottlenecks, the Gigabyte Gaming OC version of the 9070 XT was tested with the Ryzen 7 9800X 3D CPU.

This graphics card can run modern games at 4K resolution with a playable experience; however, software support, such as FSR 4, is still not perfect across all games.

Support for FSR4 and Upscaling

FSR4 support is one of the biggest problems with AMD cards. Some games, like Arc Raiders, still only support FSR3 natively and not FSR4. It's not a big deal because you can use the AMD Adrenaline program to upgrade older games that support FSR3 to FSR4.

AMD has made day-one allowlisting better for big games, but Nvidia's DLSS4 still works with more new games out of the box.

FSR4 and DLSS4 are crucial for anti-aliasing, even if you don't care about upscaling. They make images look better than regular TAA or TSR solutions. Using FSR4 native AA or Nvidia's DLA makes things look cleaner and sharper, which is great for finding players or objects at a distance.

Recommended Settings and How to Play

For the RX 9070 XT at 4K, the best settings for Arc Raiders are FSR4 quality mode, RTX global illumination set to dynamic high, and most graphics set to epic, except for shadows and global illumination, which are set to high.

Some effects that occur after the fact, such as motion blur, bloom, and lens flare, are turned off. These settings keep the frame rate steady at 90+ FPS in most scenarios, so the game runs smoothly even when the frame rate fluctuates.

FSR4 works well on some things, like boulders, but not so well on smaller things, like grass, leaves, and things that are far away. FSR4 isn't as good as DLSS4 on Nvidia cards in several ways, which makes it harder to see players at a distance. Even with these problems, FSR4 is a big step up over FSR3.1 and works well with high frame rates, especially in quality or balanced settings.

Modes for Native Resolution and Performance

RX 9070 XT can dip below 50 FPS in Arc Raiders' most demanding scenes when set to native 4K resolution, but it delivers the best visuals. FSR4 quality mode can raise FPS from about 40 to 70 or more. Balanced and performance modes can raise frame rates even further, but at the cost of visual quality.

You can get a higher frame rate by lowering the graphics settings, turning off ray-traced global lighting, or using lower FSR4 modes. However, finer details may look softer.

The Single-Player Mode in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

FSR4 works natively in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and gives great picture quality. RX 9070 XT struggles to maintain 60+ FPS with the experimental graphics preset at 4K. With taxing scenarios, it often drops to 30-50 FPS. In FSR4 quality mode, frame rates increase, but they don't always reach 60 or higher.

When you use ultra presets with FSR4 performance mode, you get a smooth experience above 70 FPS, with crisp, enjoyable graphics.

Lowering the graphics settings from experimental to ultra or high presets stabilises the FPS without significantly reducing image quality. FSR4 lets you play single-player games on this card at higher frame rates without losing too much graphic quality.

Performance in Competitive Multiplayer

RX 9070 XT lets you play Battlefield 6 and other competitive games at 4K 240Hz without any lag. Native AA gives you more than 60 FPS, and FSR4 quality setting can give you more than 100 FPS. Performance settings raise FPS even further, though the graphics become a little less sharp.

You can gain a competitive edge by lowering visual quality, which can give you more FPS without making the images too blurry. In these situations, the RX 9070 XT is still limited by the GPU, but when paired with the Ryzen 7 9800X 3D, the CPU is not a problem.

Final Thoughts

You can play recent games on a 4K monitor with the RX 9070 XT. FSR4 improves image quality and runs faster, but it doesn't always perform as well as Nvidia's DLSS4, especially in games like Arc Raiders. DLSS4 has better software support and more features than higher-end Nvidia cards, so it performs better overall.

AMD is improving the 9000 series, but due to performance and visual quality issues, we still recommend it with caution. In the end, it all comes down to whether you're okay with certain visual flaws to save money.
