When hopping into Black Myth: Wukong, figuring out the best way to spend your skill points early on can be a bit overwhelming. But don’t worry—this guide’s here to help you out with that. We’re talking about 20 points that you can invest in abilities as you progress through the game. You won’t have to grind through XP gains for each one because sometimes you’ll find meditation spots that give you a spark—a point to spend on either spell or ability advancement.
This guide will cover the basics, give you a lay of the land, and help you make sense of the skill tree. There are a ton of nodes, and studying the entire thing can be a bit much, so this guide is going to break it down step by step. The goal is to build your character in a balanced way. You don’t want to dump all your points into one thing and then find out you can’t do anything else. Although you can reallocate your points whenever you want, don’t stress too much if you’ve already spent a few sparks.
Foundation
Head over to the abilities section and see the Foundation in the top left corner. This is the most crucial node set in the entire build tree. Start by going all the way to the right—this is where you’ll find Survival. The two basic nodes here are health and stamina. Increasing either will, of course, boost your health or stamina pools accordingly.
Now, you want to put three levels into the Robust Constitution right off the bat. This will give you some breathing room when you’re taking hits early on, especially from mini-bosses that can pack a punch. After that, go for Rampant Vigor. Just put one point here—it’ll give you an additional combo attack or dodge when you need it.
Next, head over to Martial Arts in the middle and put one point into Swift Engage. We’re not really after this skill, but we need it to unlock Effortless Finisher, which grants more focus when the second move of a light attack combo hits an enemy. This is a solid pick because you’ll need focus for just about everything in the game.
Mysticism
Then, move up to the Mysticism section at the top. As soon as you unlock the Immobilize spell, you’ll see some new nodes open up. Go for Crush—its talent level moderately increases damage dealt to immobilized enemies. This is great because your immobilize spell takes a while to recharge, so you want to maximize your damage output when an enemy is locked down. Put two points here, and then head over to Stagnation. This skill lets you slightly extend the duration of immobilization when you hit an immobilized enemy with light attacks, and the effect can stack up to five times. You should spend two points here.
Staff Stances
Now, let’s talk about staff stances. We will focus on Smash stance at the beginning of the game. The other stances—Pillar and Thrust—are more nuanced and geared toward defense and positioning, but let’s keep it simple for now. The Smash stance is what you start with and is generally the easiest and most versatile stance. Start with Resolute Counterflow. This skill lets you perform a heavy attack during a light attack combo, consuming a focus point to execute a Resolute Strike. During this strike, you can see through enemies and nullify the damage their attacks would cause. The timing window is small, but you’ll deflect incoming damage completely if you get it right.
After you’ve got Resolute Counterflow, go for Exhilaration and put three points here. This skill slightly increases the health recovered upon consuming a focus point. You can’t just charge up and swing for this to work—you need to use the focus point in a combo chain. Pair this with Resolute Counterflow, and you’ll recover health while deflecting damage. This is going to be a really powerful combo once you get the hang of using it.
Back to Foundation
Finally, go back to Foundation and finish up by maxing out Robust Constitution. Then, put the remaining points into Survival. And just like that, you’ve spent 20 points, giving you a solid foundation to start your journey.
By the end of Chapter 1, you should have a character around level 20, so it’s pretty early in the game when you can build this whole setup. As you continue to gain points, It is recommended to go for the straightforward skills first before trying out the more advanced ones. Black Myth: Wukong isn’t the hardest game out there, but it can get challenging if you’re not careful with your build. A weak character can make even the smallest difficulty spikes feel impossible, but hopefully, this guide does something to prevent that from happening.
