Black Myth: Wukong | How to get the True Ending

Here's how to get the True Ending in Black Myth: Wukong.

Game Guide by Nine_toes on  Sep 01, 2024

The secret ending in Black Myth: Wukong can be tricky to stumble upon on your first playthrough if you don’t know what you are doing, but it isn’t difficult once you know the steps. This guide will help you get the True/Secret ending of Black Myth: Wukong.

If you have already beaten the final boss of Black Myth: Wukong, you can still get the true ending without replaying the whole game. You can simply press “Continue” from the main menu, spawn in the area before the boss fight takes place, and do the steps in this guide to get this ending. There are no “point of no return” moments here that will lock you into any ending.

The game has only two endings. Without getting into spoilers, the default ending is kind of bleak, and it can be referred to as the bad ending. However, the true ending is much better, and I highly recommend getting that if you like this game and its characters. It really does leave you satisfied once it is all said and done.

To get the true ending, you must first complete five secret quests spanning chapters 1 through 5. Here's what you need to do:

Chapter 1

The Whiteclad Noble will inform you about three bells scattered around the map. Ring all three bells to be transported to the Ancient Guanyin Temple, where you must defeat Elder Jinchi to obtain the Fireproof Mantle.

Chapter 2

The Yellow Robe Squire, a drunken boar NPC, will tell you about the lost kingdom of gold. Completing his questline teleports you to the Lost Kingdom of Sahali, where you defeat Fuban to acquire the Wind Tamer.

Chapter 3

A treasure hunter wearing a green rice farmer hat will speak of a watermelon field planted by Buddha centuries ago. Completing this quest line leads you to the real Maitreya Buddha, who grants you the Spell Binder ability.

Chapter 4

Defeat the Venom Daoist two times, each in a different location. Doing so unlocks a painting that transports you to Purple Cloud Mountain, where you must defeat Duskveil to get the Sewing Needle.

Chapter 5

The Pale-Axe Stalwart requests that you defeat the five-element carts. Once you've defeated all five, you can access Bishui Cave, where defeating the Bishui Golden-Eyed Beast reveals the truth about the birth of Red Boy.

After completing all five secret quests, head to the Great Pagoda in Chapter 3. The Maitreya Buddha (appearing as a child) will be waiting for you, but only if all five quests are complete. You can check your progress by looking at the murals on the walls of the Great Pagoda; each completed quest fills a mural.

To trigger Maitreya Buddha's appearance, all murals except the center one must be filled. Speak with Maitreya Buddha, who will complete the center mural and transport you to Mount Mei for a secret boss fight against Erlang and the Four Heavenly Kings. This fight is tough, so prepare yourself for that accordingly.

Upon defeating Erlang, you receive the sixth relic. You now have all six relics to get the secret ending. Just continue through the game as usual, and in the final cutscene, you’ll see something different from the default ending. In New Game+ mode, you can also select a passive perk for your sixth relic at the center of the circle.

The NPCs related to each chapter's secret quest (Whiteclad Noble, Drunken Boar, Treasure Hunter, Venom Daoist, Pale-Axe Stalwart) are all friends of Erlang, sent to test your worthiness as Wukong's successor. Completing all five quests serves as a test that will make Erlang appear if you prove yourself worthy. Don’t worry; it all makes sense once you’ve reached the end of the game.
