Dragon Age: The Veilguard Guide | Don’t Make Wrong Choices in Quests
Don't make the wrong choices in Dragon Age: The Veilguard!
Game Guide by Nine_toes on Nov 10, 2024
In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the choices you make early on can have massive consequences, determining which faction rewards stay available, who sticks around in your party, and even whether you can achieve the game's best ending.
This covers a breakdown of the early-to-mid game decisions that will affect your playthrough. Some of these lock you out of the good ending entirely. Plus, there will be mentions of quests, so you don’t end up missing out on any content you might later regret skipping. This article will have some mild spoilers, so be wary of that.
How To Keep Quests from Disappearing
As a starting point, make it a habit to revisit all available maps and mission locations after each main story mission, especially at the Lighthouse. New companion missions tend to pop up here often, and ignoring them can lock you out of important character developments, rewards, and lore.
For example, if you progress the story past Chapter 6’s "A Change on the Wind" without finishing "A Slow Poison," that mission will disappear for good. Similarly, "A Little Dragon Hatches" becomes inaccessible if you don’t do it by the time you reach Chapter 7’s "Where the Dead Must Go." If you want to get yourself more immersed in the story, you might want to take a stroll around all the maps.
Watch Out for Chapter 6
The first major decision point comes in Chapter 6 during the quest "A Warden’s Best Friend," which includes a chance to recruit Davin. Make sure to create a save file before starting this mission, as it’s an area where you won’t be able to teleport out. At the end of the mission, there’s a cutscene that shows a massive dragon assault, forcing you to choose between saving Minrathous or Treviso. This choice will impact not only the storyline but also the factions you can access and the rewards you’ll be able to obtain:
If You Help Minrathous
Choosing to save Minrathous means the city stays intact, allowing Nave to remain in your party and granting you the ability to max out the faction's reputation for the best possible ending. You’ll also retain access to the anti-crow faction rewards. However, choosing this path leads to Treviso becoming blighted, which means you’ll lose the main An Crow vendor and be locked out of valuable rewards, including one of the best rogue armors available in the game.
If You Help Treviso
If you decide to save Treviso, the outcome is quite different. The Shadow Dragons’ stronghold in Darktown is wiped out, and Vitor takes control of the surrounding area. Several members of the Shadow Dragons go into hiding, which limits your reputation gain with them and removes access to their vendor, along with exclusive items. Additionally, the Darktown candle shop may stop spawning, potentially preventing access to a unique item hidden in that area. Consider your playstyle and which factions you’d like to align with before making this crucial choice.
How to Never Miss Out
To avoid missing out on side quests and companion missions, make sure to complete any marked missions at the Lighthouse before moving on to Chapter 6. For example, Lucis has a mission at the coffee shop that can vanish if you don’t do it early enough, as he temporarily leaves the party in Chapter 9.
This applies to other companions as well, so make sure to take the time to complete any missions that could impact your later game experience or party dynamics.
How To Unlock Taash Secret Combat Map
Complete Taash’s early missions to unlock the Hall of Valor. This is a special combat arena where you can face rounds of enemies. You can get cool items by doing these challenges. Plus, this also gives you the opportunity to test out character builds while also earning rewards that make it worthwhile.
How To Unlock Devrin Bonus Zone
Devrin’s early mission, "How to Train Your Griffin," opens access to an eastern map area containing two high-level unique items. You should want to complete this mission as early as possible, make the most of these powerful items, and fully explore the eastern map zones.
Harding’s Mission
During Harding’s second main mission, "The Waiting Stone," make sure to check out a specific outpost containing a ladder that leads down to a hidden treasure. At the bottom, you’ll find a chest containing a unique item. This is pretty useful if you’re looking to beef up your build.
Emmerich Bonus Boss Fight and Unique
Emmerich’s quests appear relatively early in the game, with more missions popping up by Chapter 9. If you do these quests, you’ll eventually unlock a cool dragon boss fight in the Necropolis. You’ll be rewarded with a really powerful armor set if you’re able to defeat the dragon, so keep an eye out for this quest line.
Neve Bonus Quests and Zones
If you follow Neve’s questline, you will see that it opens up previously inaccessible areas in Dogtown. This includes a shoreline passage controlled by the Venator that becomes available during her storyline. This questline also unlocks more side missions and gives you access to areas like the Out of Tun quest and the Hidden Horde, both of which have some good fights and rewards to make it worthwhile.
Make a Backup Save At Chapter 11
Finally, as you approach Chapter 11, it’s a good idea to make a backup save. By this stage, make sure you have maxed out faction reputation and all available character side quests are completed, as you’ll hit the point of no return at some point in this mission.
