GPD Win 5 has raised the bar for how well handheld games work. It has desktop-level power in a portable form factor thanks to AMD's Strix Halo APU. The Win 5 has a detachable 80Wh battery, a 7-inch 120Hz VRR display, and top-notch build quality. It is made to provide you an uncompromising handheld experience.

Its design resembles previous GPD Win devices, but it features a larger form factor and an upgraded internal layout to accommodate the powerful chip.

Design and Build Quality

The GPD Win 5 takes clear inspiration from iconic handhelds like the PSP and PS Vita. Its D-pad is identical to the PS Vita's, using dome switches that make it ideal for precision-based games like fighting titles. Around the back, there are programmable macro keys, locking trigger switches, and a slot for the detachable 80Wh battery. The extensive ventilation layout ensures efficient cooling, necessary for the powerful APU inside.

On the top, we find a full-speed 40Gb USB4 port, a power input for the 180W adapter, and a full-size USB 3.2 port. The bottom houses another USB-C 3.2 port, which also supports mini SSDs for additional storage. You can use the Win 5 plugged in or purely on battery power. Without the battery, it weighs just 560g, making it lightweight, and with the battery attached, the total weight is around 930g.

GPD has also included an innovative battery extension cable that allows the battery to be stored in a backpack or pocket while keeping the handheld light and portable. It attaches via thumb screws and provides flexibility for longer sessions.

Display and Controls

The Win 5 features a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz VRR display, offering smooth visuals whether gaming at high or variable frame rates. It includes dual front-firing stereo speakers with DTS support, hall effect joysticks, and locking triggers that can be switched between full-throw and hair-trigger modes. The D-pad remains a highlight, offering precise directional control.

The power button doubles as a fingerprint sensor for quick logins, while additional buttons simplify Windows navigation. There's a dedicated on-screen keyboard button, a home button, and a control-swap button that toggles between controller and keyboard modes. An optical mouse sensor is integrated on the right side, allowing cursor navigation directly from the device.

Internal Specifications

GPD offers two versions of the Win 5, each powered by AMD's Ryzen AI Max 385 or Max 395 APUs. The model we tested uses the Ryzen AI Max 385, featuring 8 cores and 16 threads based on Zen 5 architecture. It runs at a 3.6GHz base clock and boosts up to 5GHz. The integrated Radeon 8050SIG GPU with 32 compute units based on the RDNA 3.5 architecture can reach 2800 MHz.

RAM options include 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB of LPDDR5X memory running at 8000MT/s on a 256-bit bus. This configuration delivers significantly faster performance than other handhelds with the Ryzen Z2 Extreme. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, with Windows 11 preinstalled and full Linux support.

Performance Benchmarks

Running 3DMark Time Spy at the default 45W TDP, Windows 5 achieved a total score of 9,362, with a graphics score above 9,000 and a CPU score over 10,000. At 25W TDP, it scored 5,328—still outperforming the Ryzen Z2 Extreme found in other handhelds. The 32-core GPU clearly delivers a substantial edge, even at lower wattages.

Gaming Performance

In real-world gaming, the GPD Win 5 performs exceptionally well. Street Fighter 6 runs at 1080p medium settings with an 18W TDP, maintaining a solid 60fps while showcasing the excellent responsiveness of the PS Vita-style D-pad.

Spider-Man 2, a demanding title for iGPUs, averages 74 fps at 1080p medium with a 28W TDP and can reach 130 fps with frame generation. Reducing the TDP to 18W still delivers 80fps with frame generation enabled, demonstrating the system's versatility when tuned for efficiency.

In Forza Horizon 5 at 17W and 900p, the Win 5 easily maintains over 100 fps. With the variable refresh rate display, gameplay feels smooth even when frame rates dip.

Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p high settings, FSR on quality, and 45W TDP achieves 90fps on average. Reducing TDP to 25W maintains 60fps, and at 900p high, it averages mid-70s—impressive for a handheld.

Red Dead Redemption 2 runs at high settings, 1080p, 45W TDP, averaging in the 80s. Even Borderlands 4, which challenges most iGPUs, is playable at 1080p medium with FSR balanced and 45W TDP. Doom: The Dark Ages performs flawlessly at 1080p high, FSR balanced, 45W TDP with the Radeon 8050SIG GPU.

Battery Life and Charging

Battery life varies depending on TDP and usage. At 10W for indie or 2D games such as Hades 2, we measured 8h36m of playtime. At 25W TDP for AAA games, expect around 2h9m, and at 45W, roughly 1h. The included 180W charger fully recharges the 80Wh battery in 1h27m.

Hot-swapping is supported as long as the device is plugged into wall power, and additional batteries with desktop chargers are available separately.

Dock Mode and Efficiency

When docked and connected to an external monitor, the GPD Win 5 can operate up to 65W TDP, essentially functioning as a compact desktop PC. At this wattage, additional performance headroom is unlocked, making it ideal for demanding tasks and gaming setups.

Final Thoughts

The GPD Win 5 is one of the most powerful and useful handhelds ever made. Its removable battery system gives it desktop-level performance, great ergonomics, and a lot of customization choices. The Ryzen AI Max 385 variant feels good to hold, with a good blend of power efficiency and performance.

It would be great if the next version had a bigger or OLED screen. Even so, the 7-inch 120Hz VRR panel is still a great experience. The GPD Win 5 really sets the bar for anyone who wants to play games on a handheld device with PC-like performance.
