Inside NVIDIA's RTX 5090 Founders Edition: Fragile Connectors and Impossible Repairs
RTX 5090 Founders Edition suffers from an overly complex modular design that complicates repair and maintenance processes.

People have quickly come to see the RTX 5090 Founders Edition as one of the most complicated and annoying GPU designs in recent memory. It seems powerful and elegant on the outside. Still, the design is so complicated that even experienced maintenance people have trouble with it.
The overly modular structure, fragile connectors, and poor accessibility make it one of the least repair-friendly cards ever produced.

The Repair Case: Two Damaged 5090s
We recently received two RTX 5090 video cards for repair from the same customer, both damaged after water block installation. We managed to fix one of them, an ASUS 5090, and returned it to the customer. The second card, the Founders Edition, on the other hand, was much harder. The consumer had put water blocks on both cards, but they both broke.
After a careful look, we found that the water block wasn't the direct cause of the Founders Edition's problem. The GPU's internal design, notably its weak connectors and modular structure, was to blame instead.
A Terrible Choice for Design
Let's talk about the biggest concern first: the way the 5090 Founders Edition is built. It was a nightmare to take it apart. There are way too many parts, which makes taking them apart very hard. The card is split into two main components: the PCIe connector block and the GPU body.
These two pieces connect via a delicate FC connector, which must click into place perfectly. The idea might have been to make the GPU modular or serviceable. In reality, it still introduces multiple potential failure points.
To put it simply, the more joints or connections you have in any system—whether plumbing, wiring, or circuit design—the greater the risk of something failing. The 5090's multiple connection points increase the likelihood of electrical failure, especially after disassembly for maintenance or thermal adjustment.
Fragile Connectors and Poor Engineering
The FC connector used in the 5090 Founders Edition is incredibly fragile, the same type we've replaced countless times on cell phones and tablets. These connectors are not designed to withstand repeated assembly and disassembly.
After carefully inspecting the board under our high-quality microscope, we found that while most voltage rails were within range, there was no image output. That led us to focus on the connectors, and sure enough, one of the connector pins was damaged.
These connectors carry both voltage and data lines, so even a single misaligned pin can cause the entire card to stop functioning. On the 5090, 128 pins depend on that fragile connector. One broken pin, and the GPU is dead.

Irreplaceable Parts and Dead Ends
The most frustrating discovery was that this connector isn't available for purchase anywhere. We searched online, used Google Lens for image matching, and scoured multiple electronics suppliers, but no luck. Even though the modular design might seem repair-friendly in theory, it's useless if replacement parts can't be sourced.
If one of these connectors breaks, the GPU effectively becomes a "no fix." The design gives you no practical advantage, as there's no way to replace or repair the damaged part.
Advice to GPU Owners
If you already own an RTX 5090 Founders Edition, do not open it under any circumstances. Avoid installing a custom water block unless you're absolutely confident in your experience. One small mistake can permanently kill the card.
We strongly advise avoiding the Founders Edition altogether. The design might look appealing, but its fragile internal connectors and two-piece structure make it highly unreliable for anyone planning to modify or maintain their GPU.

Final Thoughts
We thoroughly inspected and worked on this 5090 Founders Edition. Still, due to the damaged connector and lack of replacement parts, the repair is currently impossible. The modular approach has no benefit when spare components aren't available.
In our opinion, the old-style GPUs with single, solid designs were far more practical and reliable. There's no point in overcomplicating what already works well. If it's not broken, don't fix it.
The 5090 Founders Edition is a warning of what happens when design complexity overtakes practicality: a heavy, powerful GPU that looks impressive but fails to deliver on serviceability and durability.
