Hogwarts Legacy Guide | All Beast & Animal Locations

Track, tame, and collect every magical creature in the game.

Game Guide by Monarch on  Apr 09, 2025

This is going to be your guide to finding the locations of beasts in Hogwarts Legacy. In order to catch and tame beasts, you need to progress through the main story until the Beast class unlocks. Then, you need to complete that storyline with Poppy.

After that, you get a quest chain from Deek that expands your Room of Requirement to have Vivariums, which will increase the number of animals that you can store in your Room of Requirement and also unlock things like the breeding pen.

This also depends on how far you've made it through the main story and how many trials you have completed. So that's just the very basic— you can't do anything until you start unlocking it naturally through game progression.

Finding and Catching Beasts

Now that you've gotten that out of the way, let's talk about where you can find these beasts and how to catch them. You can keep track of the beasts you've encountered in the collections menu. As you can see, there are 13 in total, and a lot of them are naturally encountered through the Beast story or the main quest.

If you want to find where they are, you have to look at the map. This guide is going to go into specific locations, but you're looking for the claw symbols, and then you can see the name of the beast right there, even if you haven't found it yet.

You'll find the Mooncalf den and then the Puffskein den, but there are multiple locations for even the same species of beasts. There's another one for the Puffskeins, another for Mooncalfs, and then deeper in, something like the Forbidden Forest, you can see something like unicorns.

As you keep looking around, you can find different ones like the giant purple Toad and Nifflers. Nifflers are going to be very, very useful, so let's head on over there.

Using Spells to Catch Beasts

It's mostly about finding it on the map if you don't know the exact location and then heading in that direction. To catch a beast, use control spells. Pull them over with Accio, levitate them, and then switch to your Nab-Sack or have it on the same spell kit.

Eventually, press Square when it's lined up, and you can catch it. Arresto Momentum is the best spell for catching beasts, but you need to go deep into the story. As you can see, it might not be unlocked, but it also isn't completely necessary.

Now, you can grab a Niffler and keep running around until you have all the beasts you need. You do want a male and a female so they can breed. There are some interesting nuances to catching beasts. You can just mash the Square button to try to get it as soon as possible—there's no lockout or drawback to hitting the button too soon. That's good to know early on.

Freeing Caged Beasts

As you fight poachers, you might find some cages that have beasts inside. If you've unlocked lockpicking through quests and story progression, you can actually get beasts that are not found in dens. Unlock the cage, and once you do, it will set the beast free. But it's scared, and it's going to try to run off. So have your spells ready, even if you're going to be rescuing it.

Just do the same thing, and that's pretty much all there is to it. Try to stay in the area, and you can also move a bit while holding the Nab-Sack. Chase it to keep it in range, and just like that—boom. Settle yourself. I mean, you know, home.

Best Locations for Nasals and Other Beasts

Since you just caught a Nasal, let's get some more. Go south of Hogwarts to the northern South Sea Bog. Go to that Floo Flame, head a bit more south, and there's going to be a Nasal den there. Also close by, there's a giant purple toad den, so if you're just trying to gather everything else, set that waypoint and head on over.

Another interesting thing is that you don't have to get the animal on the first try. If it ends up getting away from you, it saves progress in a weird way. Let it run off, or sometimes the game just traps it and makes it easier to get. Nasals are just not really that skittish, apparently.

You can see a yellow ring around them. If that breaks, the catch stops, but there's still a ring around it, so it kind of saves the progress. Try again, even if it gets out of your grip—just keep chasing it until you catch it.

Inventory and Breeding Setup

To see the beasts you currently have, go to your inventory. That's how you can check if you have male and female versions of each one. You've got male and female Nifflers and Nasals, so you're good to go. Let's grab some toads.

At this point, it's going to be the same thing. No new tactics are needed. Just get them. If you go north of Hogsmeade to the East North Ford Bog, you can find Thestrals there. Also, to the west of that, you'll find Jobberknolls. Let's grab some of those now.

Tips on Spawning and Selling Beasts

There are a few other things about catching beasts. You can catch as many as you want. Some will be more difficult, but you can generally press Square and get it on the first try. If you catch all of the beasts in an area, just skip time until the beasts respawn.

Everything in the game is time-gated, so you can let time pass naturally or go to the map, hit R3 to wait, and keep spamming that until they respawn.

For easier-to-catch beasts, catch all of them because you can sell them for 120 gold each. If the gold-to-time value is worth it to you, then that's a pretty good money-making method.

Tracking Rare Beasts and Finishing the Collection

Diricawls are the way to the south. You'll find some down by Marunweem. For the next two, you'll need to be further along in the story. The Graphorn is part of one of the trials and spawns all the way at the bottom of the map. The Phoenix is at the end of Deek's quest line.

There's also the Hippogriff in the Forbidden Forest. It's a tricky and fast one. You could try using an invisibility potion, but it wears off really quickly. You can also go for Disillusionment, pull them in, and try to stall while switching spells. Until you get Glacius and Arresto Momentum, it's not really worth it.

You have to discover the Hippogriff manually before it appears on the map. That's east of the West Forbidden Forest Floo Flame. And yes, the unicorn might dab on you, too.

Use an invisibility potion. Maybe run up close, combo it out, and you can get it. Spam the invisibility potions and get super close, which means you can do it. That means you'll have them all except for the two quest ones.
