In this guide, you'll learn how to easily defeat the first boss in Hogwarts Legacy—the Armored Troll. This strategy works even in hard mode and lets you come out of the fight without taking any damage. But before you dive into builds and best gear, it's best to get familiar with this core boss fight.
Understanding the Troll's Attacks
Defeating the Armored Troll begins with understanding its attack patterns. As the game indicates, whenever the red sigil appears on your character, you'll have to dodge it in order to avoid the troll's attacks. If you try to cast the Protego spell instead, the troll will simply break your guard, and you'll still take damage.
Most of the troll's attacks, including the charge, can only be dodged. However, for the overhead slam—where the troll moves toward you a bit and then tries to smack you with his club—you can avoid it using Protego. That attack triggers the yellow sigil, and as usual, if you hold Protego, you'll also cast Stupefy and stun the troll for a bit.
Best Damage Strategy
Most of the damage you deal will come from using your Blast spell, especially after avoiding the troll's charge attacks. It's usually easy to notice when a charge is coming because the troll will prepare his legs for a bit before charging.
This is easy to dodge, and afterward, the troll will most likely hit a wall or an object and be stunned temporarily. During this time, you should spam your Blast spell on his back for great damage.
Battle Strategy
When the fight starts, the troll usually charges first. If you want to hit him in the behind, dodge, and then repeat your Blast spell. Keeping your distance from the troll will make it easy to avoid most of his other moves, which are just flailing and hitting. If you want to stay safe, even if it does a little less damage, you should keep this distance when you use Blur attacks.
You can also press RB to use your Ancient Magic and throw some of the nearby objects at the troll. However, this won't really do great damage. It's more efficient and more fun to dodge and attack using your standard spells.
Keep dodging until the troll's charge move is available again, leaving his back open for more damage. Watch for the leg movement—this is when you dodge and go in with your Blast spell.
Using Protego and Stupefy
One of the few moves you can block with Protego is the overhead slam. You might be taking a chance, but if you can tell when the troll is about to slam down, you'll know when to use Protego and then Stupefy to temporarily stun him. This gives you a chance to move and hit again from behind.
Finishing the Fight
After a few rounds of dodging charges and blasting his back, the troll will attempt a two-part charge. This also leaves his backside exposed and vulnerable. With consistent spell use, you'll bring his health down until the finishing blow is ready. At this point, you deliver the final strike and defeat him.
You can defeat the Armored Troll even at level five, with a pretty much starter character. The key is learning his patterns and managing your positioning and spell timing effectively.
With this approach, you'll defeat the Armored Troll on hard mode without taking any damage.
