Intel Nova Lake rumors suggest renewed desktop CPU competition with larger dies and BLLC cache integration.

Around the middle of February, there is always a week when things don't go well. There is nothing bad going on, no major personal disasters or anything. Just a lot of small problems that make it hard to get things done. By Friday, you realize that it would have been better to take the whole week off from the start than to fight the tides to get things done.

It was a nice week for PC hardware news, which is good. Things weren't slow, but the chaos that 2026 has delivered so far was a little less crazy than usual. There is still a shortage of RAM and hardware. Still, there's more information than ever about Intel's next-generation Nova Lake CPUs. MSI released the fastest gaming GPU yet and fulfilled the prophecy of the 5090 for $5,090. Discord also added age-verification rules that sparked widespread anger.

Chipsets for Intel Nova Lake and the 900 Series

Intel's next-generation processors, known as Nova Lake, are the next best thing for keeping the CPU market competitive after the Core 200 series failed. Intel appears to have begun working with outside partners on Nova Lake, sparking many rumors.

Leaker JKIN posted a list of specs for five LG1954 chipsets: B960, Z970, Z990, Q970, and W980. Z990 is the best chipset because it supports full overclocking and provides 48 PCIe lanes, 12 PCIe 5.0 lanes from the chipset, and 16 PCIe 5.0 lanes from the CPU. W980 is the workstation version that keeps the connection but takes away CPU overclocking while keeping memory overclocking.

Q970 is a more basic alternative for a workstation. Z970 is a mid-range enthusiast chipset that supports overclocking, but not base clock overclocking. It has 34 PCIe lanes and doesn't support PCIe 5.0. B960 similarly has 34 PCIe lanes and only permits memory overclocking.

There are reports that Intel wants the new socket to live more than a few generations, although this has not been proven.

Size of the die, BLLC, and making

Leaker HXL shared the die sizes. Intel has not confirmed any of it. Intel's answer to AMD's 3D V-Cache is called BLLC, or huge last-level cache. AMD has been able to beat Intel in gaming performance with X3D CPUs in recent CPU launches. Mercury Research says that AMD has more than 35% of the desktop x86 CPU market. Intel is still in the lead, but it has lost ground.

There are rumors that the die size of Nova Lake is roughly 150 mm² with BLLC and 110 mm² without it, which is a 36% increase for the final-level cache version. It is also bigger than the rumored sizes for AMD's Zen6 CCDs, but Zen6 has 12 cores while Nova Lake has 8+16. Larger die sizes may raise production costs, but this is still only a guess.

It is believed that Intel will produce Nova Lake CPU dies at TSMC's N2 Fab 22 in Taiwan and at Intel's 18A Fab 32 in Arizona. However, it is not clear how production will be split between mobile and desktop variants. Intel has told clients that it will not leave the client market.

MSI RTX5090 Lightning for $5,090 Costs

MSI launched the RTX 5090 Lightning, which costs $5,090. When the RTX 5090 was out last year with a claimed MSRP of $2,000, people thought a $5,090 version was a joke. The market has evolved since then.

MSI made 300 of the 5090 Lightning and set up an open draw system so that people may buy one. Multiple reviews, including one from Hardware Unboxed, say that the card has a GB202 chip and 40 50A power stages on an overbuilt PCB. It has two 12v2x6 ports that let you use an 800W basic VBIOS or a 1,000W extreme VBIOS. There is also a 2,500W VBIOS for LN2 overclocking that you may get if you ask for it, but it will violate your warranty.

The 360mm AIO cooler that comes with it has a full-cover copper block that cools the GPU, memory, and power delivery parts. This keeps temperatures at their highest, between 50 and 60 degrees Celsius, during overclocking and stress testing. The question is whether that is worth two to three times the MSRP of a 5090 Founders Edition.

Intel ZAM and the RAM Shortage

There is still a scarcity of RAM. A 64GB RAM kit, which can hold 10,000 MP3s, now costs as much as a MacBook Air. Memory makers are ramping up HBM production for AI data centers, putting further pressure on DRAM supply.

Intel developed ZAM, which stands for Z-Angle Memory, in collaboration with SIM Memory. ZAM is being marketed as a replacement for HBM. It is aimed at AI and data center applications instead of consumer devices.

AI Surveillance and Ring Backlash

Amazon's Ring Business ran a Super Bowl ad linking lost pets to the need for security cameras. People didn't like the ad. It was already known that Ring partners with Flock, a business that uses AI to watch people. This has given government organizations, including the Secret Service, the Navy, and ICE, access to data.

The marketing didn't make people feel good about the issue; instead, it raised concerns about widespread surveillance. Users still complained, even after attempts to calm things down, such as saying they were ending the Flock alliance.

NVIDIA also took a lot of flak for working with companies like Palantir on AI-powered surveillance projects, which raised broader questions about how AI and data are used.

Final Thoughts

The PC hardware market is still shrinking, which has affected tech media. Because of high pricing and shortages, fewer people are interested in building and reviewing computers.

Some creators have started making different kinds of material. For example, instead of a PC build or hardware review, there was a full-day webcast from Disneyland. As hardware grows harder to find and more expensive, market conditions continue to affect content initiatives.
