Ansur the Dragon is one of the most challenging bosses in Baldur's Gate 3, which demands tactical preparation in setting up a good party. This guide will walk you through preparation, techniques, and combat tactics in taking down Ansur for a win in this epic battle. You will become equipped with everything you may want to know about taking down this terrible creature, from his devastation capabilities to phase control in the fight.
Preparing Your Party for the Ansur Fight
Before fighting Ansur, make sure you're prepared for him. Above all, make sure your party is well-rounded: have a tank who will be soaking all the damage, a healer who will keep your guys alive, and damage dealers who actually will focus on the dragon. Have your heroes equip gear that gives them resistance to lightning attacks, as most of Ansur's strikes inflict lightning damage. Potions of Lightning Resistance and Energy Protection Scrolls will help mitigate most of the dangerous abilities he possesses.
Stock up on healing potions and scrolls, as most parties do not have a dedicated healer. Spells like Bless and Haste are great in increasing your success rate because they enhance your attack rolls and movement speed. Position your characters appropriately before the fight. Use the pillars and terrain of the arena and spread out your team members to reduce the damage received from Ansur's AoE attacks.
Understanding Ansur's Abilities and Resistances
Ansur has several horrific abilities that could wipe out an ill-prepared group. The Breath of the Storm attack gives huge lightning damage in a wide cone, so keep your team spread apart to mitigate this attack. It uses Lightning Barrage, which is a strong projectile attack against many players. The most dangerous mechanic is the summoning of Storm Orbs, which increase his abilities but should be quickly destroyed so they don't overwhelm your group.
Ansur is resistant to fire, cold, and lightning damage. In other words, normal elemental spells are not very effective on him. Instead, focus your efforts on using physical attacks, or better yet, spells that inflict force, necrotic, or psychic damage. Magic Missile, Blight, and Disintegrate are spellcasting options since they circumvent many of his resistances and hit hard.
Phase One: Opening Moves
At the beginning of the fight, Ansur will immediately start with a few basic strikes to see how your party takes the blows and then summon a few storm orbs. It's very important in this case to keep your party spread and, if possible, bring down the orbs as quickly as possible. Keeping Ansur from getting power makes his attacks way easier to take. Use your tank to attract the attention of Ansur for most of his attacks and falls while your damage dealers drop the orbs to deplete Ansur's health.
Save the biggest spells and special abilities for after this time. Keep it to basic attacks, cantrips, and low-level spells that will allow you to do constant damage. This keeps the strongest resources available for later parts of the fight when Ansur becomes far more dangerous.
Phase 2: Aggressive
When the health of Ansur reaches around 50%, he becomes aggressive. He will use Breath of the Storm more often, conjuring more storm orbs. From this moment on, keeping your party alive is the most important issue. Spells and potions of healing should be used often, and characters should be kept behind cover to avoid getting taken out by his devastating AoE attacks.
You need to buff up your party during this phase. Haste, Bless, and Protection from Energy can greatly improve survivability and damage output. Employ crowd control-when possible-on your spellcasters with abilities such as Hold Monster, Stunning Strike, or Banishment to take the dragon out of commission for a few rounds. Weakening the dragon, even for a few rounds, may powerfully turn the tide of battle in your favor.
Kill newly summoned storm orbs as fast as possible. As the time they spend on the field grows, so does the power of Ansur's attacks, capable of overwhelming your party in no time. Make sure your tank stays busy with Ansur so he doesn't assault your weakest party members, and your ranged characters get positions where they can constantly attack from.
Phase 3: The Final Stand
Once the health of Ansur gets very low, he becomes highly aggressive and performs the most lethal moves. He will have the ability to use more frequent uses of Breath of the Storm and can utilize Lightning Barrage to attack numerous party members. Now is the time when the fight needs to come to an end as fast as possible. Switch to using the strongest spells and abilities and finish him off before he starts overwhelming your party.
If a party member falls, instantly use a Scroll of Revivify or a resurrection spell; if you are not careful, losing a party member in this stage may snowball into a full wipe really fast. Make sure to keep the characters as far out and behind cover as possible to minimalize damage from his AoE attacks.
Use any remaining crowd control skill to interrupt Ansur's attacks to open up any possible opportunity for your damage dealers to attack. Summons like familiars, or a conjured monster, are good to use in disruption and to absorb a bit of Ansur's attacks. At this point, tenacity is key to victory, just stay focused, manage resources smartly, and do not relent from the attacks.
Tips for Success
There are a couple of things to keep in mind that will go a long way in increasing your chances of beating Ansur: use the environment to your advantage, there are a lot of destructibles in the arena that will put more hurt on him, like exploding barrels. Do not be stingy with consumables. Potions of Lightning Resistance, healing potions, and scrolls often make the difference between success and defeat.
Summons and friends will go a long way in this fight. Utilize spells such as Conjure Elemental or Find Familiar in order to draw the eye of Ansur while the rest of the party dishes out the pain. Pay close attention to the attacking patterns of Ansur. His skills operate on a very predictable pattern, learning when to expect his most hazardous strikes and thus doing what one can to prepare.
Finally, don't underestimate the power of positioning. Having your team spread out and under cover will significantly reduce the damage that will be dealt by Ansur's AoE strikes. If you manage to handle your positioning and control those storm orbs appropriately, dealing with Ansur's formidable skills will be way easier.
Rewards for defeating Ansur
Victory over Ansur comes with great rewards: many experience points and offbeat loot. After the fight is over, examine the surroundings well in search of treasures and powerful artifacts. For the whole campaign, this victory over Ansur proves to be a major achievement since it sets your party's reputation and how strong the party actually is.
Apart from the material prizes for victory over Ansur, his defeat is a pleasing action in demonstration of how much your party has achieved and what kind of tacticians they are. To win this war requires detailed preparation in every respect and good management of all means, as well as proper decision-making. By preparing well for this battle using this tutorial, you will be able to qualify for one of the hardest battles in all Baldur's Gate 3.
