Sarevok Anchev, the iconic bad guy in the original Baldur's Gate, returns as an extremely formidable opponent in Baldur's Gate 3. Given his extraordinary power, coupled with lethal minions and a challenging environment, this battle can be one of the most difficult in the game. A detailed step-by-step process on how to beat him and come out on top is described below.

Preparation Before Fighting Sarevok

Preparation is very critical where Sarevok is concerned. Make sure to rest your party before heading towards his location so that everyone is at full health. Go on a spending spree to purchase potions, scrolls, and other consumables, especially those giving some sort of defense boost or status ailment removals.

Have your casters prepare crowd-control and debilitating spells such as Hold Person, Slow, and Blind. Have characters in your party who are highly mobile and can attack from a distance since positioning will play a huge part in this fight.

Sarevok is highly resistant to physical hits, so arm your characters with items that deal either radiant or magic damage. The protective gear that improves saving throws or reduces necrotic and fire damage will make it easier for your party to survive his crushing blows. Lastly, spread some Scrolls of Revivify around or give resurrection spells across your party members to mitigate downtime in case one of you falls.

Knowing Sarevok's Abilities

Sarevok is lethal in close combat, and a monster of many unique abilities. He would smite many with a great sword swing, clearing a huge chunk of room, and deal a lot of damage in the process. His high armor class and vast health pool make him extremely resistant to any ordinary takedown attempts. His minions are going to try and swarm over your party and engage the weakest links.

The primary abilities of Sarevok are deadly AoE attacks and a horrific scream that will shatter the morale of your party. He will also teleport and change his position, making it hard to pin him down. All such movements are easy to anticipate and respond correctly once you know about them upfront.

Positioning and Strategy

At the start of combat, position your party such that it can respond appropriately to Sarevok's initial attack. Keep casters and rogues back, and your most tanky character forward to catch some blows. Utilize geometry whenever possible: something similar to a choke or high ground will shift the ebb and flow of warfare. When possible, break his minions up so they cannot flood your back row.

Especially target Sarevok's motion control. Entangle or Web will severely restrain his movements and give your party the most time possible to focus their fire. Clear his minions in the first half of the combat using crowd-control so as not to overwhelm the team with targets and focus attention on the main.

Prioritizing Targets

Though Sarevok is the number one target, killing off his minions takes precedence. Not only can his companions heal and buff or deal massive quantities of damage to your side, but cleaning them out will make the fight tenfold more accessible. Utilize Fireball, Spirit Guardians, and other area-of-effect spells to whittle them down, saving your real big hitters for Sarevok.

Once his minions fall, concentrate all your attention on Sarevok; try using Heat Metal or Bane on him to reduce his armor class or put his attacks at a disadvantage. All ranged attackers must place consistent damage on him while being mobile enough to avoid his area attacks.

Finding the Weaknesses

Despite his excellent strength, Sarevok has some loopholes that can be used against him. His low dexterity makes him weak against spells requiring Dexterity saving throws such as Fireball and Ice Storm. For psychic damage, he carries no resistance, so Mind Spike and Dissonant Whispers would be very effective on him.

Place Bless or Haste on your party to increase their hit-and-survival chances. Apply debilitating effects such as Bestow Curse that limit his damage dealt. Sarevok is reliant on his physical strength, and he can be quite frail when those talents are used on him; thus, he should always be placed under constant pressure.

Being Adaptable

Sarevok's unpredictability means one has to be prepared for a fluid game plan. Be ready to change methods at a moment's notice as combat goes sideways. Keep an eye out for party health and resources, using any healing spells or potions as needed to maintain the party's stability. Immediately resurrect a party member that goes down, as this preserves momentum. Utilize any gifts one receives: positions of Sarevok, breakdowns in his defense. One can also try using environmental hazards or interactive objects near the battlefield.

Ending the Fight

As Sarevok's hit points dwindle, he may wax more violent-seeking to destroy your party in some last desperate counterattack. Continue employing one's defensive techniques and stay focused as you press the attack. Employ the most aggressive attacks and spells in your arsenal to quickly destroy him before he has an opportunity to turn the tide.

When you defeat Sarevok, you will get loot that is truly priceless, not to mention that you just passed one of the toughest tests in the game Baldur's Gate 3. Take a little time, reflect on the battle, and enjoy your well-earned victory. You are able to defeat this legendary monster and secure your legacy as a hero of the Sword Coast with excellent preparation and full knowledge of Sarevok's abilities coupled with a good strategy you run.
