Lord Enver Gortash is the most difficult opponent you are going to face in the game Baldur's Gate 3. Gortash is a big manipulator and is an integral enemy; his defeat needs to be well thought out and correctly executed. This is a step-by-step guide on what you will be doing from preparation to eliminating him.
Preparation: Scouting, Planning, and Equipping
Before beating Gortash, you will have to get familiar with the territory and how this combat encounter plays out. Gortash is located within the Wyrm's Rock Fortress; his lair is guarded by many hostile foes and traps. First, you will want to scout in advance in stealth mode, monitoring his guards, other potential threats, or avenues of escape. Characters with good Stealth or Invisibility spells make great use of information without causing a premature fight.
Outfit your party accordingly. Have many potions, scrolls, and ammunition. You will need an abundance of healing potions and spells since the fight is going to be long and very intensive. Take with your equipment that raises resistance to fire and lightning since these are the most popular kinds of damage in this encounter. Take into battle heroes with high Initiative in order to have any kind of advantage during the first rounds of combat.
Choosing the Right Party Composition
The right party composition is important to be chosen. Gortash is a clever tactician who utilizes strong-range attacks and a host of minions to aid him in battle. A well-rounded team that includes damage dealers, healers, and utility characters will give you the flexibility you need to counter his tactics.
Start by taking out his smaller allies early and whittling down those defensive barriers with a Rogue or Ranger. Add to that a spellcaster- ideally one with counterspells and some AoE that can clear many enemies out and make life hard for Gortash. Next, add a Paladin or Fighter- a good tank that will take harm while keeping him in melee. Finally, cap it off with a Cleric or Bard to heal and empower your party during the fight.
The Fight begins: Kill Order
When the war begins, it is about keeping in control of the battlefield. Gortash minions include the likes of Steel Watchers and mercenaries, and they won't be easy to handle should they start to overwhelm. Cast AoE spells, such as Cloudkill or Fireball, to smite clustered enemies. If there are any Steel Watchers, reduce them with Dispel Magic or similar effects.
While he's busy sorting out his underlings, pay attention to what Gortash is doing. He'd much rather attack from a distance, often using powerful area-of-effect attacks or calling more minions into being. Close the distance with melee characters to make his area-of-effect attacks less effective. Silence can shut down his casting ability, while Grapple and Ensnaring Strike can pin him in place.
Counter Gortash
Gortash's greatest assets are his traps and machinery. He can turn environmental hazards - turrets, explosive charges, and so on - against your party for massive damage. Use high-perception characters to seek out and disable such hazards as soon as possible. Spells like Disarm Trap and Mage Hand are particularly useful here.
He also has strong personal attacks in the form of very damaging area-of-effect strikes and crowd-control spells. Because of this, use protection spells such as Shield of Faith or Counterspell when he attacks the most important members of your party. Even Bane or Slow could be enough to hamper his accuracy and action economy, giving the advantage to your side.
Exploit Weaknesses: Focus Fire & Control
Gortash seems almost unkillable at first glance, but his biggest weakness lies in relying on minions and traps. Once his comrades fall, he becomes much easier to handle. When the field is clean, focus fire on him, making use of high-damage capabilities such as Sneak Attack, Smite, or Magic Missile that will decrease his health.
Positioning is key at that moment. Flank Gortash with melee fighters to impose a disadvantage on his attack roll while protecting the ranged attackers. Make use of spells like Haste to provide additional actions to your dealing characters and ramp up the offensive tempo.
Victory and Aftermath
That is a big deal, taking down Lord Enver Gortash, but he's literally half the story. So, if he falls, be prepared for the aftermath of his downfall. Scavenge his corpse and the surrounding area for treasures such as unusual gear and plot-critical trinkets. Moreover, some unique dialogue options will appear when talking with your companions and other NPCs about your success at this critical juncture.
Rest up and spend some time healing after the fight. If there are still active Steel Watchers, you could disarm them by means other than combat before continuing with the story. Be circumspect- the choices you make regarding Gortash's demise will bear long-term fruit in how the end of the game plays out.
Finally…
Lord Enver Gortash is a tough nut to crack in Baldur's Gate 3, and with due preparation, smart strategies, and good execution, you just might triumph over this fearsome villain. Manage his minions, exploit his weaknesses, and put all the strengths of your party into action to assure victory and move forward to handle Faerun's greater forces of evil.
