Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess offers a one-of-a-kind unique experience that hooks you in left, right, and center. A mix between tower defense and hack-and-slash, this game can be difficult to tackle. This guide will go over the basics of the game and offer tips & tricks to improve your gameplay for the better.

Crystals & Rations

The main resources you will deal with are rations and crystals. In the game, Rations are found in pots or by helping out and rescuing animals around the villages. These Rations are used to heal yourselves and your allies. Crystals, on the other hand, are found by splitting plants afflicted by the curse and purifying them. Remember that you can’t purify anything at night. Killing enemies with Soh also earns you Crystals.

You can use crystals for:

  • Converting inhabitants into tokens.
  • Changing the class of tokens.
  • Advancing Yoshiro.

Villagers

Remember that this isn’t just a tower defense game. Villagers are not static, nor are they permanent. You should also note that none of the classes in the game, save for one or two, are bad or useless. You will often need to mix and match them instead of relying on one. 

As Soh, you’ll have the ability to do lots of things, but at the end of the day, you’ll still need the villagers. So, with that in mind, let’s look into the best roles for the villagers. Also, remember that for this list, we are considering the villager roles at their max upgrade. You should also note that Crystals are also used to advance Yoshiro’s path, so you’ll need to save some. In this regard, you might need to get lower-tier roles, but as you’ll see, they are often the best for a general situation.

S Tier

Archer

The Archers are a tape. They have decent damage and are all-rounders in the sense that they are cheap, hit both flying and ground enemies, and have a fast attack rate. They are your answer for most situations and are a good option if you are done specializing and now have leftovers.

Spearman

The Spearmen have low attack rates but are good against bigger enemies like Daigaki and Rosokuro. They also have moderately high health and work best when paired with other units, preferably ranged ones like the Archer. A good composition of Archers and Spearmen with a smaller base of supplementary units will let you get through most stages. They also happen to be ridiculously cheap when compared to the rest of the units.

A Tier

Ascetic

Another essential unit, the Ascetic, is unique in that it slows down enemies, which is critical. Good support units are not cheap, costing 150 crystals, but they more than makeup for it.

Mage

Good AOE damage if you keep them away from enemies. The Mage would be the best role if it weren’t for one thing. They are held back by their high costs, meaning you’ll only be able to field a few. This also means that other roles overshadow it in terms of total damage output.

Ninja

The Ninja can be described as a mini-Soh, which sort of justifies its price. They are good at stalling and delaying, teleporting throughout the stage, and dealing with both flying and ground enemies.

Thief

Now, hold on here; they aren’t much use in combat; that is to say, they are useless in combat, but their ability to gain more crystals immediately makes them worthwhile. 

Sumo Wrestler

A great utilitarian unit that does heavy damage and high hit points. Effectively, they are tanks that cost 300 crystals.

Woodcutter

The first class you have is the most useful one in the game. Decent at every stat but definitely not the master of any. They have ok damage and attack rates and are great in numbers. They are also good at harassing enemies, especially the bosses.

B Tier

Shaman

A good price for a decent utilitarian role. You will often find little use for them since the game is so focused on attacking and has an offensive playstyle where you should be able to kill things before they can harm you. Other than that, there is nothing much to say; they are great healers, and that’s about it.

Marksmen

Great range, great damage, so what’s the issue here? They need to be in large numbers to make up for their attack rate. They also need a buffer to stall for them, and since you need at least two or three of them, you’ll end up with not too many crystals left for other roles. You can get more done with a mix of the other roles than going all-out marksmen, despite what the stats might say.

C Tier

Priest

The Priest is a utility role that does very little to make it stand out overall. When it is useful, you can find some other combination that does its job just as effectively.

Cannoneer

The Cannoneer is almost a useless role; they have an area of effect attack with a sluggish attack rate, and to top it off, they miss a lot. You’d be better off using massed archers. They grow more effective when facing bosses as they suddenly don’t miss as much. But even then, you’ll generally not struggle against bosses enough to whip out a Cannoneer

Villager Upgrades

The villagers should only be upgraded when relevant. For example, if you are running a Woodcutter & Archer Build or Spearman & Archer build, you should focus on those roles first. The other roles should be done rarely or to tackle a specific problem.

Soh Upgrades

The best upgrades for Soh are Worship and Punishing Strike. Worship will keep you in the fight for longer, while Punishing strike deals extra damage.

Bosses

There are many bosses in this game, and each has a different way of tackling them. However, there are a few basic things to keep in mind for them. You should equip the most damaging Tsuba guards you can afford to have. As mentioned previously, you should have the Worship and punishing strike upgrade for Soh.

Priorities

You shouldn’t always aim for the final stage with Yoshiro; instead, focus on purifying and destroying all the plants in a given area before you start off with what you do. Yoshiro can usually never make it to the Torii gate in one day, anyway. The plants are strewn around and often are hidden or semi-hidden, so keep an eye out and rotate the map often. 

Afterward, think about the units you want to keep and look at the map to see the route you want to take. Don’t bother with shamans; instead, rely on not getting hurt and quickly healing up using crystals for when you do get hurt. Remember that you can heal both the villagers and Soh in this manner.

You don’t need to be near villagers to issue commands, so don’t worry about that. Additionally, before boss fights, you can place villagers ahead to ensure an extra layer of preparation since they don’t start the boss fight.
