Video game mods have existed since there have been games. One of the best facts about PC gaming is the unbridled access to mods. Whether you are a casual player or a hardcore fan, mods can bring the gaming experience to new heights.
Some of the oldest games still have thriving communities thanks to the many mods available that bring a new life to them. Sometimes, these mods change little things, like offering a graphics overhaul or tweaking stats to make games harder or easier. Other times, the mods add a lot of new content to the games, breathing fresh air into them. They may be partial or total overhauls, turning one game into another wholly.
This list includes 10 AAA games with many mods available. Although the list is presented as a top 10 list, whether the games are in 10th place or 1st, they all have great mods.
Fallout 4
Fallout 4 is not the best Fallout game, not by a mile, yet it is one of the newer titles and has some of the most active player bases. In fact, its player base is more active than Fallout 76's, and Fallout 4 lacks any multiplayer components.
Its DLCs do a great job at improving the game's faults, but a far bigger reason is mods. Again, a wide variety of mods offer many changes, ranging from overhauls to total conversions that improve almost every aspect of the game. You have a mod for every situation and every play style. Do you want more narrative experience? You have mods for that. You want more action and turn Fallout 4 into a discount Call of Duty? You can do that.
Total War: Warhammer III
Are you into strategy? Maybe you're a very big Warhammer fan? If your answer is both, you'll find a good home in Total War: Warhammer III. The fantasy Total War title is one of the best Total War games out there, despite what fans of historical Total War may say.
The mods found in the game range from reskins and new units to entire new factions. Other mods can bring quality-of-life changes, such as giving you more skill slots or increasing the rate at which you gain them.
Regardless of your choices, you can find pretty much any type of mod for the game. However, modding itself is more complicated than for the game, and performance issues will persist due to the game's use of Denuvo.
Arma 3
There are a few military simulation games that can reach the heights of Arma 3. It is an extremely realistic shooter that lets you set up missions and scenarios and play them out with your friends.
It comes as no surprise that the game has very deep mod support and offers a wide range of mods. These may include playing in the Grand Army of the Republic, Warhammer, or many, many more fantasy armies.
It can also extend to very small and niche additions that allow you to craft your scenarios. The mod support is not too amazing, but you can easily install mods. It also has a pretty big community. If you're looking to mod the game, you might be a bit hard-pressed, as it is no easy feat.
Baldur's Gate 3
Baldur's Gate 3 benefits a lot from the wide variety of mods that can only be found in RPG games such as this. For a game based on Dungeons & Dragons, it doesn't need to do much to lay the groundwork for people to add more to it.
From new classes to expanded ones to more weapons and, really, more everything. You can get anything and everything from D&D to more. The game does a remarkable job at making all of that work, and as for mod support, there are quite a few tools available if you want to get your hands dirty.
Minecraft
Minecraft is a game that requires no introduction. Some people's childhoods were crafted by this game, and for a sandbox with pretty open code, it is a modder's dream. You can have pretty much every mod you can imagine available for this game.
These mods can do a lot and really push the game's technical limits. The modding scene is also very active and accessible if you can bear modding in Java.
Grand Theft Auto 5
GTA 5 is a legendary game that has a lot going for it. With its sequel just announced, you may think the old game is dying. Yet, there might just be a chance that GTA 6 wouldn't be able to top the timeless classic.
A large part of the fame comes from the famous GTA Online, which lets you connect with other players online and play on a shared server. This is primarily the main scene that the mods look to, adding lots of roleplay elements, overhauls, and more.
Crusader Kings III
Any fans of grand strategy should know Crusader Kings III in and out. A masterful mix of genres, Crusader Kings lets you take control of any historical characters between 800 and 1400 AD. With a slew of DLCs, there shouldn't be a lack of content you have to yourself.
Yet, if you want more, the game comes with a very large range of mods offered by a highly active community that makes some of the best mods you can find for the game. From minor overhauls to certain mechanics, visual changes to entire total overhauls that vastly expand the game's mechanics and detail them in a way that still fits the game, making it seem like a DLC.
Other total overhauls turn the games into a complete world, going from Earth to other fictional worlds or periods. These Mods are also easily accessible, with the developers providing extensive support. They are also easy to start with, requiring almost no coding or modding knowledge.
Fallout: New Vegas
New Vegas needs no introduction. Perhaps the most beloved Fallout game is Fallout: New Vegas. A very well-made game from about 14 years ago, New Vegas has an active community despite its age.
With mods, you won't even feel the game's age, as the community has worked tirelessly to modernize the game and bring new strides to the title. Despite being pretty inaccessible, you have a wide variety of mods at your hands for almost any purpose.
Mount & Blade: Warband
In 2024, Mount & Blade: Warband is an ancient name. Yet, despite its age, the game has a thriving, if small, community. It is a highly open-ended sandbox game that leaves you much in the way of instructions. The game doesn't even have a clear end game.
Such an open-world game naturally has a lot in the way of mods. From total overhauls to conversions that take you to other fantasy worlds and beyond, the community is pretty open and welcoming as well as accessible, so anyone looking to start modding will have an easy time finding help.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
It seems like Bethesda Games is on the list because you could really put any of their games on this list. In fact, out of the five Elder Scrolls games, you can have three of them on the list. Elder Scrolls 6 may come anytime soon, but the legendary 5th game is here to stay.
Undoubtedly, however, Skyrim is the most popular and largest of the Elder Scrolls games and thus is at number 1. With a catalog of hundreds of mods, you'll find pretty much any mod you can think of, be it some small overhaul or yet another conversion mod.
The modding community is also pretty large and expansive, and the game itself is one of the more accessible ones on the list, so it's compelling to start off here if you are new to modding.
