Total Chaos Guide | All “I Know Who I Am” Journal Locations

Find every document and tape you need to complete the journal and unlock the I Know Who I Am achievement in Total Chaos.

Game Guide by Ornstein on  Dec 04, 2025

In this guide, you see where every journal page and cassette is hidden across all nine chapters of Total Chaos. These notes are spread from Arrival to Resolve, and you must collect all of them in a single playthrough to complete the journal.

One tape is locked behind killing the first boss, the Protector, which means you cannot go for the Good Ending and earn I Know Who I Am in the same run. Most notes are hard to miss, but the easiest ones to skip are numbers 18, 20, 25, 41, and 42, so pay extra attention when you reach those points.

Chapter 1: Arrival – All Journal Locations

In Chapter 1: Arrival, you start your collection early. The first document is right next to the Coastal Key required to proceed, so make sure you check that area before moving on. After your Pickaxe breaks, look on the nearby table to grab the next note before you leave that room.

When you reach the Electricity Building, head inside and look for a barrel just after entering. A note rests on that barrel, and another one lies on a table right next to the Save Point in the same building.

Before you craft your first weapon, check the cabinet left of the handle and Glue you use for that weapon. The final document in Arrival is sitting there, waiting to be picked up.

Chapter 2: Decay – Graveyard and Blue Block Documents

In Chapter 2: Decay, your first document is next to the switch that requires the Blue Block Key. Do not rush past it, because it sits very close to where you interact with the switch.

After you finish the parry tutorial encounter, look at the wall next to the planks you have to break. A note is pinned there and is easy to overlook if you focus only on the combat.

Later, after you unlock the shortcut back to the locked Miller’s Storage room, check the shelf in that area to find another document.

Before the corridors start turning red, step into a dark room and search the table inside to pick up yet another note. When you finally exit the tunnels, take a moment on the chair overlooking the ocean. There is a document placed right on that chair.

Following the Good Ending route, you will reach the graveyard. Break the boards in the corner of the graveyard to open a hidden area and collect a secret cassette there. This hidden tape is tied to the graveyard and is easy to miss if you do not break those boards.

After you have the Blue Block Key, follow the Blue Block Access route. Go straight ahead once you enter this section and look on a shelf for another tape. Right before the first Widow encounter, you will see a Save Point; the next document waits right next to it, so grab it before you step into that fight.

Chapter 3: Forgotten – Police Station and Protector Tape

In Chapter 3: Forgotten, the chapter begins with a document on the ground. It lies next to the writing on the wall that says “Jealousy is suffocating,” so look down in that area before you move on.

After you defeat the first Maw enemy, check the barrel next to the window that overlooks the “Get Help” sign. Another note sits there, and you should pick it up before leaving the room.

After the boulder cutscene, you will reach a Save Point. Next to it, on a precarious plank, you can find another document, so edge out carefully and grab it.

Once you enter the Police Station, you eventually come across the required Lighter. Right next to that Lighter is another note, so do not ignore the area around that key item.

Later, after escaping the hide-and-seek sequence, a madness wall can open up on the left at the top of the stairs. Check that side carefully; a new room opens there. Inside, a note is placed on a table in this hidden room, and this is one of the easiest pages to miss.

Before the first boss fight, you will see a Save Point again, and there is another document next to that save, so grab it before you step into the arena.

After you kill the Protector, walk through the hallway that follows the boss fight. In this hallway, you find an important journal entry that you must pick up to finish the collection.

This is also the key page that forces you to choose: you cannot do the Good Ending route and still get the full journal in the same run, because this tape only appears after the Protector dies.

Chapter 4: Storm – Oasis and Hotel Pool Tapes

In Chapter 4: Storm, start by checking under the bus stop in front of the Oasis Goods entrance. A document is tucked under there and can be easy to miss if you move too fast. Another page sits in front of the level exit at the end of the area, so before you leave, look carefully around the exit door to find it.

After you fight the first Glare, look at the wall nearby; one of the notes is placed there. You then move through the street in front of the Oasis Goods General Store, where another document sits waiting. Make sure you scan that storefront before heading on.

Inside the hotel pool room, use one of your Bolt Cutters to unlock a locked door. Once inside that room, look in the sink to find a cassette. This cassette is one of the more missable ones because it is hidden behind that cuttable lock.

After you obtain the Oasis Goods Key, enter the Oasis Goods store and check the kitchen counter inside; a tape lies right there.

A final document for this chapter sits right next to the Molotov Cocktail Recipe required to progress. When you pick up the recipe, grab the note beside it so this chapter is fully cleared.

Chapter 5: Crossroads – Ruins, Phones, and Library

In Chapter 5: Crossroads, your first document appears right at the beginning of the level, next to the “tower” structure you see early on. Do not rush past this starting area before grabbing it. As you move toward the first key, watch for a barrel along the path; another note rests on that barrel.

Still on the way to the first key, you will reach a Save Point with an elevator nearby. Instead of taking the elevator, follow the left path from this save. At the end, you find Tunnel Key on a seat, and right next to that key is a tape.

Be sure to pick up both the Tunnel Key and the cassette before leaving. When you head toward the second key, you will pass through a telephone area. Just after that, another barrel holds a document, so look around that spot carefully.

Later in the chapter, you must solve the library puzzle to progress. On this library setup itself, among the puzzle elements, there is another note. Check the puzzle area thoroughly before you leave the library, because this document is tied directly to that required progression point.

Chapter 6: Regression – Valves and Pump Rooms

In Chapter 6: Regression, start by finding the second Save Point of the chapter. Right next to that save location is a document you should pick up before continuing deeper into the level.

You will also come across the Lever Replacement required to progress. Near this lever, another journal page is placed, so you need to inspect that area carefully when you collect the replacement part.

After you turn the first valve, look around the nearby desk. A note sits on that desk right after this first valve interaction.

Later, when you reach the Save Point next to the third valve, you will find another document close to that save. This chapter’s pages are tightly connected to the valve objectives, so keep an eye on desks and save stations around them.

Chapter 7: Madness – Catacombs and Reverse Maze Tape

In Chapter 7: Madness, you find an early document next to the Save Point before entering the catacombs. Be sure to pick it up before you drop into the deeper tunnels.

As you progress through the catacombs on the main path, another note appears directly in your way, so check the central route and do not ignore any tables or surfaces you pass.

Eventually, your Lighter goes out in the catacombs. Right after that happens, a document is located directly in front of you, so even in the dark, take a moment to pick it up.

After this, you go through the memory section. At the entrance of the apartment during this memory segment, you can find another note waiting; grab it before you enter the interior.

Once the memory section ends, the voice on the radio tells you to take the exit. Instead of obeying, turn right and go through the dark maze in reverse using your last Flare. More Flares will be available at intersections marked with candles, helping you navigate.

Follow this reverse maze carefully; at the end of this path, you discover a tape. This is one of the most missable recordings, so make sure you ignore the suggested exit and push through the darkness to reach it.

Chapter 8: Chaos – Forgotten Ones and Master Key

In Chapter 8: Chaos, after the first save of the level, go left down the corridor and enter the first door on the left. Inside this room, a tape is sticking out of a cabinet; inspect the furniture closely so you do not walk past it.

Later, after the room with the Forgotten Ones, you will find a Save Point again, and another document rests right next to that save.

As you progress toward the Master Key required to advance, watch the area around where you pick up that key. Another journal page lies next to the Master Key, so collect both the key and the note before moving on.

Chapter 9: Resolve – Final Document and Achievement Unlock

In Chapter 9: Resolve, there is a final note you must grab before entering the area with the four switches. Check the Save Point just before that switch room; a document sits right next to this save.

Picking up this last page instantly unlocks the I Know Who I Am achievement, because your journal is now complete with everything there is to find in Fort Oasis.
