Netflix Has a Ton of Games in Development

Netflix is continuing its push into gaming with 40 games headed to the platform in 2023 despite relatively little interest from Netflix users.

Netflix has been a part of the games industry for little more than a year now, so it was time for the company to put out a statement about its plans for this gaming push. The news is quite surprising as Netflix appears to be aiming to release a ton of games throughout 2023. At least 40 games are releasing over the course of the year while an additional 70 are in active development with Netflix-partnered developers and a further 16 are being developed in-house.

Netflix announced all of this at a press event, and later posted it to its blog, and explained what all is happening with this new gaming division. This large portfolio of new games will include a variety of genres, like RPGs, puzzle games, and narrative-oriented experiences. Some existing games will seemingly be adapted for the platform, but this has already occurred, such as the indie classic Oxenfree’s arrival on the streaming service last year.

Netflix is also planning on expanding its portfolio through more adaptations of its own properties. There are already a few Stranger Things games out there, but the most popular game on the platform has thus far been its adaptation of Too Hot to Handle, the unscripted dating show. So, there is going to be a sequel to that particular game later this year.

The company has already released games like the follow-up to Valiant Hearts: The Great War, titled Valiant Hearts: Coming Home, and it is also set to release new Monument Valley games among others. Many of these games are part of an especially strong push towards the mobile market, but as the mobile market is one of the biggest portions of the industry, this does make sense.

However, despite Netflix’s move towards building its gaming repertoire, it would appear that very few Netflix users have actually made use of the games on the service. This has not stopped the executives at the company from continuing this push with the expectation that things will continue to grow and develop over the coming months and years. We will have to wait and see whether Netflix’s efforts pay off or if this entire attempt was doomed from the start.
