Project White Sands: Valve Could be Working on Half Life 3

After two whole decades since Half Life 2, we finally have some solid evidence that Half Life 3 could be in development.

Half-Life is one of those “greatest of all time” video games that changed the gaming landscape when it first came out. The smart enemy AI, the Source engine and the story all contributed to making it a huge deal back in 1998.

The sequel that followed 6 years later similarly made groundbreaking innovations to the art of making games. If you have one look at the games that were around during that time period, like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and then look at how good Half-Life 2 looks, you would have an idea as to how revolutionary Valve’s creation was. I think the game holds up visually even today, especially considering it is as old as I am. It would be so funny if Half-Life 3 comes out before GTA 6.

In the early days, it was Half-Life that fueled the pride that is felt by those of the PC master race. Consoles didn’t hold a candle to just how great it was. Years later, the Half-Life series remains a must-play—especially since it can run on a toaster these days.

There have been countless rumors of a Half-Life sequel being in the works. Anyone who has remotely kept up with them would attribute the chances of it existing to unicorns and magic. Despite this, there are significant signs that point towards the development of Half-Life 3.

The rumors stem from an actor’s resume which mentions that they have worked on a “To Be Announced” role in Project White Sands under Valve. In addition to this, it has been noted that White Sands is the name of a park and military testing range in New Mexico, the state in America where Black Mesa is located. If you didn’t know, Black Mesa is the research facility where Gordon Freeman, the main protagonist, works in Half-Life.

In 2021, HLX was also referenced in the code of many of Valve’s games, found by Tyler McVicker, a well-known Valve data miner. McVicker believes Project White Sands is another name for HLX. He also strongly believes that this is going to be a non-VR Half-Life game, unlike Half-Life Alyx. McVicker also found references to HEV suits in other Valve games which is the suit that Gordon Freeman wears in Half-Life.

Now, there is no official announcement from Valve regarding this, but for once this is decent evidence that Half-Life 3 could exist. If you think the wait for Silksong and a Bloodborne PC port is long, think about the people who were unfortunate enough to be able to play Half-Life 2 on release. This glimmer of hope might finally bring light back into the eyes of many. And as for me, I think it is about time I replay the series once again as I eagerly wait for Valve’s confirmation.
