EA’s Iron Man Game Finally Emerges with a Huge Open-World Gameplay Leak

The unfinished footage reveals rapid aerial traversal, deep suit customization, a comic-inspired visual style, and a surprisingly large lineup of villains.

EA’s Iron Man game has been one of those projects that fans have spent years wondering about. Since its announcement in 2022, there has been very little official information about what the game would actually look like, leaving plenty of room for speculation about whether the project was still moving forward.

The leaked trailer is far from a polished presentation. It includes placeholder credits, rough textures, unfinished character models, and even a release-window card with no date or window filled in. In other words, what has surfaced appears to be an internal work-in-progress build rather than something intended for public release.

There is even some developer humor hidden within the unfinished credits.

Ultron is listed as an executive producer, while Hulk is credited as a world director. Those details are obviously not serious production credits, but they offer a small glimpse at the developers having fun with the internal build before it unexpectedly became public.

The biggest surprise is arguably how large and fast the game appears to be. EA’s Iron Man is reportedly being developed as an open-world game, and the leaked footage shows Tony Stark flying at high speed through skyscrapers, over bridges, and across large battlefields.

More importantly, the transition between aerial traversal and ground combat appears rapid, allowing Tony to drop out of flight, fight enemies on foot, and return to the air with very little interruption.

The setting also appears to be moving away from the version of Iron Man's world most people know from the movies. Instead of using New York as its primary location, the leaked footage contains signage pointing toward Chicago. That could help the game establish its identity instead of simply recreating the locations associated with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There also appear to be other locations beyond the main city. The trailer reportedly includes glimpses of Japan, including bamboo forest areas, as well as a major sequence taking place aboard an S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier.

Combat appears to be a notable improvement over previous Iron Man games.

The leaked footage appears to show an evolution of the systems seen in Iron Man 2 and, to some extent, Marvel’s Avengers, but with a much greater emphasis on speed, impact, and variety. Tony has access to his chest beam, wrist lasers, micro-missiles, repulsor blasts, and melee attacks, giving him several ways to deal with enemies.

The physical impact of those attacks also appears to be more pronounced. Tony can launch enemies into walls and use his armor's abilities at close range, while the different weapons can seemingly be combined with his movement and aerial abilities.

The Iron Man suit itself could become one of the game's biggest features. One scene shows Tony standing in a room surrounded by different suits while interacting with a control panel. The armor is seen visibly reconfiguring around him in real time, which may mean suit changes are presented as a real part of the world, rather than just being managed through a standard menu.

There also appears to be a deeper customization system behind the armor. You may be able to modify individual suit components, select different weapons for your build, and change the equipment mounted across Tony's shoulders and arms.

That customization could become an important part of progression if the system allows you to build Tony around different weapons or combat styles. Rather than simply unlocking a new suit for cosmetic purposes, different components could potentially influence how you approach combat.

Tony Stark himself also appears to have a distinct visual identity.

His face does not seem to be a direct likeness of Robert Downey Jr., which helps separate this version of the character from the MCU. Instead, the design appears to draw from a particular comic-book aesthetic, with some viewers comparing it to David Marquez’s artwork from the All-New, All-Different Invincible Iron Man run written by Brian Michael Bendis.

The influence of that comic era apparently extends beyond Tony's face. Some of the armor designs also appear to take inspiration from the same run, while one unfinished shot near the end of the trailer reportedly shows another suit variant that longtime comic readers may recognize.

The game's villain lineup is also shaping up to be one of its most interesting elements. The leaked footage reportedly features several characters from Iron Man's comic history, including Madame Masque, Obadiah Stane as Iron Monger, Justin Hammer, Crimson Dynamo, Whiplash, and Blizzard.

There is also speculation that Ultron could have a role in the game, although the leaked credit joke alone does not confirm that he will actually appear. Hulk has also been mentioned due to the humorous credit, but there is no confirmation that he is part of the story.

That could make the game especially engaging for players whose knowledge of Iron Man mainly comes from the MCU. Characters and storylines rarely seen in mainstream adaptations could become important parts of the game’s world, giving the developers plenty of material to work with without simply retelling stories audiences have already seen.

The supporting cast also appears to have a few familiar names. The leaked footage features Pepper Potts and James Rhodes, aka War Machine. Then there is the possibility of Edwin Jarvis being involved, although his presence remains unconfirmed based on the available information.

Technically the game is built on Unreal Engine 5, which goes some way to explain some of the visuals seen in the footage.

Even in its rough state, the trailer reportedly shows detailed lighting, large environments, and impressive rendering across locations such as the city and the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier. The current-generation presentation is one of the reasons the unfinished footage has attracted so much attention.

The project was first announced in September 2022 as part of a larger Marvel partnership between EA and Marvel. Since then, EA has provided extremely limited official information. EA also canceled its planned Black Panther open-world game, which understandably created concerns about the company's wider superhero projects and whether Iron Man could face a similar fate.

Those concerns became even harder to ignore as EA went through major changes, including its acquisition by a Saudi-led consortium. With so little information about Iron Man for such a long period, there was plenty of uncertainty surrounding the project's status. The leaked footage now provides strong evidence that the game is still in development.

The response surrounding the leak also appears to have been unusually positive. The team behind the project has reportedly activated its Twitter account and appeared to embrace the attention rather than treating the footage as a sign that the project had fallen apart.

A polished version of the game could potentially appear at The Game Awards in December, although that remains speculation rather than a confirmed announcement.

A release soon enough is a bit optimistic, and a 2027 or 2028 release seems more realistic, if the game is anything to go by. Giving the developers additional time could ultimately be the better outcome, especially if EA wants the game to become the foundation for a larger superhero franchise.

The potential goes beyond Iron Man itself. A successful open-world Iron Man game could demonstrate that there is room for other Marvel heroes to receive similarly ambitious single-player experiences.

This could possibly result in games centered around characters like Hulk, Daredevil, or Black Widow, while providing Marvel and DC with more opportunities to branch out from the typical Batman and Spider-Man formulas.

But Iron Man’s still the focus for now. The leaked footage after years of silence has finally shown what EA Motive has been building, and the early version already seems to have a strong identity. If it reaches its potential, it’s one of the most ambitious Marvel games EA has worked on with its fast aerial traversal, large environments, detailed suit customization, comic-inspired designs, and villain lineup heavily rooted in Iron Man’s history.
