New Captain Marvel Game Reportedly in Development

Could It Break the Recent Marvel Slump?

By nine_toes, Posted 12 Aug 2024

It looks like Marvel might be rolling out yet another game, this time featuring Carol Danvers, more commonly known as Captain Marvel. While Marvel's recent movies have been hit or miss (except for the latest Deadpool & Wolverine flick, which really delivered), this new game could be a chance for them to regain some ground.

The scoop comes from insider Vscooper, known for reliable leaks, who suggests a Captain Marvel game is in the works. Though details are scarce, there’s speculation that EA might be behind it, given their three-game deal with Disney. They’ve already announced Iron Man and Black Panther titles, so this third game could be the one still under wraps.

Marvel’s been busy pushing out games recently, with Insomniac churning out Spider-Man titles, and others like Blade, Wolverine, and a multiplayer hero shooter called Marvel Rivals also in the pipeline. But can a Captain Marvel game stand out? She’s not the most popular hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially after her last movie didn’t exactly wow audiences.

As for who is going to develop the Captain Marvel game, signs point towards EA. EA has signed a contract with Disney 2 years ago that mentions they would make three games based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Out of the three games that were promised, only Iron Man and Black Panther were announced. Moreover, Jeff Grubb, who leaked the existence of the aforementioned two games before they were announced by EA, and he has reported to not know anything about the third game. With the rumor of this Captain Marvel game, there is good reason to believe EA might be behind it.

If EA is involved, we might see a single-player, open-world action game in Unreal Engine 5, with space battles and powerful energy attacks. It could be a solid experience, especially for those looking for something new in the Marvel gaming universe. But whether it’ll be enough to break Marvel’s recent streak of mediocrity is still up in the air. We’re getting info on a lot of games from Marvel and some of them are bound to be good, especially with how many different developers have been put to work. I’ll be keeping an eye on these games—especially 1943: Rise of Hydra as it caught my eye when the story trailer was unveiled.
