The rumors that Microsoft would purchase Minecraft are true. In a press release Mojang announced that it had been acquired by Microsoft for $2.5 billion. Following the deal, all three of Mojang's original founders, including Markus "Notch" Persson, will be leaving Mojang.

In a blog post on Xbox Wire Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's Xbox division, talks about the acquisition and confirms that Minecraft's official convention, Minecon, will continue next year under Microsoft's supervision.
