Why Ubisoft’s next project might finally bring back the original Assassin’s Creed in a big way.

If you have been following Assassin’s Creed for a while, you already know that Ubisoft is deep into remake territory right now. With 2026 bringing you a remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, rumors and insider reports are now pointing toward another major remake right after that. This one is known as Project Stardust, and if the information so far is accurate, it could be one of the most important releases in the franchise’s history.

Right now, Black Flag is expected to arrive as an enhanced RPG-style remake. It is said to use assets from Skull and Bones while also stripping out most modern-day elements and focusing more on Edward Kenway’s pirate era. That alone already tells you a lot about Ubisoft’s current mindset. They want to take what worked in the past and rebuild it with modern tech.

Once Black Flag is out of the way, Project Stardust is expected to move into full production. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has already confirmed that multiple Assassin’s Creed remakes are in development, so this is not just random speculation. From the looks of things, Stardust is up there with those remakes.

A big reason Black Flag is being remade first likely has a lot to do with Skull and Bones.

That game was supposed to be a spiritual successor to Black Flag, but it ended up being a critical and commercial disaster. Ubisoft reportedly lost hundreds of millions of dollars on it and was forced to release it because of agreements with the Singapore government.

Instead of letting all that work go to waste, Ubisoft appears to be reusing parts of it to rebuild Black Flag and turn it into something successful. And now, with Stardust coming next, you naturally start asking the big question. What game is Ubisoft going to remake?

For most fans, the answer seems obvious. Assassin’s Creed 1.

According to multiple reports, Stardust is Ubisoft’s second remake project and will begin production after Obsidian, which is the Black Flag remake, is released. While they did not officially confirm which game is being remade, everything points toward the original Assassin’s Creed.

It makes sense when you think about it. Assassin’s Creed 1 is the game that started everything. It introduced you to the Brotherhood, the Animus, and the entire modern-day storyline. But even if you love it, you probably remember how repetitive it could be. There were tons of tailing missions, repeated objectives, and limited variety.

A modern remake could fix all of that.

You could get smoother controls, better combat, expanded missions, and a more open world, among other things. The story could be told in a more engaging way, and Altair’s journey could finally get the depth it deserves. With modern graphics and performance improvements, Assassin’s Creed 1 could feel like a brand-new game while still holding onto its original identity.

Ubisoft knows this would likely be a guaranteed hit if done right. And if Stardust succeeds, it could open the door to even more remakes. Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson has also mentioned something called "Assassin’s Creed Remake 3."

Right now, it does not have a codename, a developer, or a confirmed game. It is expected to be released about a year after another major RPG project. The reason it is still undefined is probably simple. Ubisoft wants to see how well Black Flag and Stardust perform before committing to another remake.

If things go well, they have plenty of options.

They could move straight into Assassin’s Creed 2 and remake Ezio’s trilogy game by game, which would honestly be a smart business move. Those games are still fan favorites and would almost certainly sell extremely well. They could also look at Origins, Unity, Syndicate, or other entries.

You can already see Ubisoft trying to reconnect with its roots. Assassin’s Creed Mirage was marketed as a return to classic gameplay. The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Hexe is expected to be more linear and focused, inspired by earlier titles instead of massive RPG systems.

At the same time, Ubisoft is still working on large RPG projects like Codename Nebula, which is rumored to be set around the Aztec Empire and Spanish Conquest. So now, you are seeing a clear strategy. Ubisoft wants to balance everything. They want classic-style games, huge RPGs, and polished remakes, all existing side by side.

They are also expanding the franchise beyond games. A live-action Assassin’s Creed series is currently in development with Netflix, and it has already secured major creative talent. On top of that, Assassin’s Creed, along with Far Cry and Rainbow Six, is now managed under Vantage Studios.

This shows you just how important the franchise is to Ubisoft right now.

Looking ahead, 2026 is likely when things will really start to get interesting. By then, the Black Flag remake should be out, and insider leaks will probably start revealing what Project Stardust truly is.

If it turns out to be an Assassin’s Creed 1 remake, you can expect major changes, expanded content, and a full modernization. So the real question is simple. Are you ready to return to where it all began?

If Ubisoft gets this right, Project Stardust could be the remake that reminds everyone why Assassin’s Creed became so popular in the first place. And judging by everything we know so far, it looks like that moment might finally be coming.
