The Game Awards celebrate the best of gaming. However, they are also a big platform for major video game announcements and reveals. Sure enough, the 10th iteration of The Game Awards 2024 had a pretty stacked roster of announcements that many could not have seen coming.
New projects and long-anticipated titles were finally revealed, and more were seen at The Game Awards. Here are all the big ones.
Witcher 4
Cyberpunk 2077 is about doing well and is finally a good game. So, not surprisingly, CD Projekt Red showed up with a Witcher 4 trailer. The trailer focuses on Ciri, and it seems she has grown up to be just like Geralt. The trailer, lasting about five minutes, didn't show off too much, more or less establishing the theme and premise of the game. While Ciri will undoubtedly be the major figure in the game, it remains to be seen if we will follow in her footsteps or play as an entirely different character.
Unfortunately, we didn't get to see any gameplay, but since it's CD Projekt Red, the game is undoubtedly like its predecessor, The Witcher 3, incorporating a major choice-based element and story-driven RPG. The release date is still up in the air. One can only wonder when that'll come.
Elden Ring: Nightreign
Alright, this one was a massive surprise. Now, everyone expected Elden Ring to be a prominent feature, with its latest DLC Shadow of the Erdtree being one of the nominations for Game of the Year. However, no one saw this coming. FromSoftware came in swords blazing with the announcement of a roguelike Elden Ring spin-off.
Now, watching the trailer, you'll recognize many of the assets from Elden Ring itself, as well as many of the enemies you fight in that game. But it's not just a transformation, no sir. This new game adds a bunch of new mechanics and abilities.
The game also looks to feature a Monster Hunter-style co-op and the general loot randomness of roguelike games. Whatever one may think, it's definitely interesting. It is slated to come out sometime in 2025.
Slay the Spire II
Now, to start things off, it's something niche. Slay the Spire saw massive success from the early days during its Early Access to its full release in 2017. Many have tried to recapture the indie game's charm and mix of roguelike deckbuilding and turn-based combat. However, most have failed. With an exciting trailer, we now see the iconic roguelike deck builder is here, as revealed earlier today at The Game Awards. Most information is still under wraps, however, so you'll have to stay tuned for more.
Split Fiction
From the folks who brought you It Takes Two and No Way Out, we saw an interesting game concept. Hazelight brings in yet another co-op action adventure, this time featuring a simulation of a sci-fi and fantasy world. The game is looking great, and what's more, it comes out on March 6, 2025, not even four months away.
Borderlands 4
Borderlands 3 came out in 2019, and fans are thirsty for more. Originally announced at the Summer Game Fest in June, Borderlands 4 has just got an official reveal trailer. The co-op looter-shooter is pretty much a renowned name, known for its over-the-top sense of humor and action.
What you can be sure of is that this iteration of Borderlands is all you'd want to see in a Borderlands game. We've yet to see details, naturally, but hey, it's real, and it's coming.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet
Now, Naughty Dog has been really quiet for a while, and we assumed they're mostly working on Crash Bandicoot or The Last of Us, some of gaming's biggest titles. But they just revealed a project that has been a secret for the past four years. Promising an ambitious story and emotional narrative, the studio created something new and intriguing.
Supposedly, having major sci-fi elements. The trailer revealed very little. It's supposedly an action-adventure game set in space. We know that the main protagonist is called Jordan, and he's looking for someone. The game appears to be a PlayStation exclusive as well.
Mafia: The Old Country
Mafia has been a fan-favorite series, and with all the limelight GTA VI is getting, many might forget that Take-Two Interactive & 2 K's hit series Mafia. Another reveal from Summer Game Fest, Mafia: The Old Country, takes you back to 1900s Sicily, following the Sicilian Mafia.
The trailer gives a small taste of the game's story and theme. There's still not much news about the game outside of this, but we know it's coming in Summer 2025.
Helldivers 2: Omens of Tyranny
Now, this one was not a surprise. Another foe threatens the freedom of Super Earth! Everyone assumed Helldrivers 2 was getting a third enemy faction sometime this year, but no one would've thought they'd drop exactly as soon as they were revealed.
This hilariously left many excitedly scrambling back into playing the game, fighting against the new faction, the Illuminates. The mind-controlling aliens are already seeing the best and brightest of Super Earth with around 155k players on the Illuminates front, and let us tell you, they're a hard nut to crack. The update comes with new enemies, a new vehicle, and new weapons. So, what're you waiting for? For Super Earth!
Palworld Feybreak
Speaking of updates, Palworld is getting an update in the middle of the winter. Titled Feybreak, the update is slated to come out on December 23 of this year. It will introduce new weapons, elements, and new Pals to tame and eat. The update is somewhat of a surprise, seeing how the developers of Palworld are embroiled in a legal battle with Nintendo.
Outer Worlds 2
Our final game of the day, Outer Worlds 2, got another trailer. The first game in the series was a massive success. It was developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the guys who brought games like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout New Vegas, and Grounded.
Obsidian is already working on another action RPG game set in the same world as Pillars of Eternity. The Outer Worlds, meanwhile, was more of an open-world sci-fi RPG. The first game was not devoid of criticism; however, many cited that the gameplay was unpolished and lacked variety. Obsidian is supposedly back, better than ever, with its sequel slated to be twice as big as the original game.
Like the original, Outer Worlds 2 is supposedly a first-person RPG set in the same universe. It is supposed to come out in 2025 and provide great writing, creative storytelling, and a good amount of humor.
Well, that was a lot. Most of these announcements would be big on their own at another time, and it was a treat getting all of them. Naturally, we get many more tidbits of news from The Game Awards. Such as the legendary Hideki Kamiya and Hideo Kojima, who are working on Okami 2, the Zelda-like game. A new game from wargaming called Steel Hunters saw a showcase. Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth and The Last of Us 2 are also coming to PC in 2025. It's definitely going to be a stacked year.
