Call of Duty made $3 billion in 2020

2020 was a horrible year for many people around the world but not the gaming industry. Most people looked to gaming to escape the torment of this year and one of the most popular franchises is Call of Duty. The recent installment Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launched with many technical problems, crashing issues, even bricking next-generation systems, and the game is still being praised. Well, as a whole the franchise made $3 billion in 2020.
This isn't just from Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War but the entire franchise. According to CharlieIntel:
Activision says over the last 12 months fan engagement and premium game sales of Call of Duty has reached an all time high, the highest in franchise history. The company says this is growth is in part thanks to the franchise’s new “shared ecosystem business model.”
Following the record-setting launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, the Call of Duty franchise has surpassed over $3 billion in net bookings over the last 12 months with key performance metrics across engagement and premium game sales at all-time, franchise highs over the period.
Much of the surge in player count comes from the free-to-play mode Warzone but many players are still playing other versions of the game. Maybe with all this money, Activision can finally pay their employees enough to buy food from their cafeteria or not layoff a bunch of people.
