Call Of Duty Warzone is About to Change Big Time with Major Season 2 Updates

Raven Software lays out a bold competitive overhaul heading into Season 2.

Call of Duty and Raven Software have officially revealed a significant gameplay change for Warzone in Season 2, which includes some anticipated elements as well as some unexpected surprises. This time, the emphasis is firmly on competitive play. What makes that especially interesting is that the second season also happens to be the final chapter of the current era of Warzone before everything gets reset for MW4 Warzone.

Raven shared these details in a new blog post that went live during a busy news cycle, landing right in the middle of the Xbox Direct event where, notably, Modern Warfare 3 Remastered never showed up. The post is labeled as part of the "Road to Season 2," which likely means this isn’t the last blog we'll see before launch.

According to the devs, they’ve spent the last few months closely analyzing competitive play across all skill levels. That means everything from queue times to overall match quality was put to the test. What they found, in their own words, was that the current format needs to evolve. February 2026 is being framed as the official starting point of that evolution, confirming that next month marks the beginning of a new direction for competitive Warzone.

One of the first concrete changes is the return of Ranked Play Resurgence, which will arrive early in Season 2.

Multiplayer ranked is confirmed to launch right at the start of the season, likely around February 5 or 6, but Warzone ranked won’t be there on day one. The idea seems to be giving the update a bit of breathing room so you can install it and the developers can ensure there are no major bugs. Realistically, "early Season 2" probably means within the first one or two weeks rather than immediately at launch.

When it does arrive, Ranked Play Resurgence is expected to deliver the high-intensity gameplay that we live for. Raven describes it as a mode that continues to reward aggressive play and quick, on-the-go decision-making while still maintaining the depth and progression that we've come to expect from competitive Warzone.

For a while now, there’s been uncertainty about what form ranked would take in Season 2, whether it would be Resurgence, traditional battle royale, or both at the same time, like in past seasons. Now that question is answered, at least initially, with Resurgence making a "resurgence".

That said, the biggest shake-up comes with the introduction of an entirely new competitive mode. Raven is rolling out a beta version of Iron Gauntlet, which they describe as an evolution of Iron Trials. In Warzone 1, it served as one of the earliest attempts at a truly competitive ruleset before formal ranked modes existed. It featured higher health values and tweaked mechanics that emphasized skill over style, and it was widely seen as a standout limited-time mode during the Cold War era of Warzone

Years later, Iron Gauntlet is bringing that idea back in a much bigger way.  This mode is designed to redefine competitive battle royale completely. Iron Gauntlet will take place on a large-map battle royale experience with elements like health, loot, and loadout rules. Interestingly, Raven avoids naming a specific map, instead sticking with the phrase "large map battle royale." Now that could be purposefully kept low-key or a hint at future locations like Avalon; it remains to be seen, but it’s definitely something worth keeping an eye on if you're a Warzone lover.

If Iron Gauntlet proves successful and receives strong feedback, it’s easy to imagine this mode becoming a foundation for competitive play in MW4 Warzone.

The developers plan to closely watch player feedback and in-game data during Season 2 to decide how Iron Gauntlet changes and what role it will play in future seasons.  How competitive modes will be scheduled is another big change. Raven is switching from running several ranked modes at once to a rotation system where only one competitive mode is active at a time. When you think about it, this choice makes sense because ranked players are only a small part of the overall Warzone player base.

When you split that group into more than one ranked playlist, it makes matchmaking worse, especially in higher skill tiers where you keep facing the same opponents. Iron Gauntlet will be turned on during certain sprints, and Raven will let players know about these sprints ahead of time through playlist roadmaps.

Ranked Play Resurgence will be turned off for a short time while Iron Gauntlet is on. The goal is for this method to bring competitive players into one ecosystem, which will lead to better matches and more exciting moments with exclusive rewards.

Raven also says that this structure helps them get clearer information about how each format works.

Raven also said that they would be posting a separate blog about the 2026 Resurgence Series. This is part of the larger competitive scene, which includes the time leading up to big events like the Esports World Cup. Call of Duty esports channels already have a full roadmap that shows the dates of tournaments and other important events.

Raven has also answered one of the most important questions about Ranked Play Resurgence in Season 2: the map. Even though promotional art still shows Rebirth Island, ranked Resurgence will not be played there this year. Instead, games will be played in Haven's Hollow.

While Rebirth remains a strong and popular map, Haven’s Hollow offers something different, and for many, new environments paired with worthwhile rewards.

All of these changes point to a full-scale makeover of Warzone’s competitive experience in Season 2. Traditional battle royale ranked is being replaced by Iron Gauntlet, Resurgence ranked is returning with a new map, and the entire system is being optimized to unite the player base rather than splitting it.
