Spike Chunsoft has finally talked about its upcoming remake of Danganronpa 2. The project will come out just in time for the 15th anniversary of the series. The producer recently talked about this in an interview and answered why they chose to remake Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair instead of the original game.
They also discussed what players can expect from the story changes and how they are balancing both the franchise's history and its future. At first, the team thought about going back and fixing the first entry, but in the end, they chose not to.

According to the producer, the original title's story is what the whole series is based on, and making too many changes to it could destroy its main plot structure. Because of this, the choice was made to reimagine Goodbye Despair in a way that keeps the familiar world while adding new touches.
The remake starts with the same famous scene on Jabberwock Island as the original. Not long after the introduction, though, a major event changes the plot in a big way. This new version doesn't branch off in the middle; instead, it makes a whole new plot. The important thing is that what happened in the original games is still true. This means that longtime fans won't have to deal with the loss of their favorite stories.
Details about how to play the game are still mostly secret, but the producer gave a hint that the class trial methods might be changing soon. Fans can look forward to new game mechanics, but the exact details will be released in later announcements.
There is one big difference: the voice acting. The whole group re-recorded their lines for this remake, but the Japanese voices of Monokuma and Monomi were done by actors who have since died. These parts will be played by new people. Besides new voice acting, the game has completely redrawn characters, revamped backgrounds, and updated settings like the hotel and resort areas, which now look like they're in a tropical paradise.
The team hasn't said for sure if bonus modes or mini-games will be added, but changes are coming in the next few months. The producer said that the length of the scenario would be the same as or even longer than the original, and that the franchise creators are actively supervising and handling idea creation and signature "tricks" to make sure that the show is real.
The exact name of the remake is Danganronpa 2 x 2, which means two by two. The first demo will be shown off at an anniversary event in November of this year.
Fans are now more interested in the idea of a Danganronpa 1 remake because of this project. The developers said that they thought about making a different version of the first game at one point, but they decided not to because they wanted to keep the main story the same.

For now, that means that going back to the beginning of the series is not likely to happen soon. What if Danganronpa 2 x 2 does well, though? That could mean that the original game can be remade in the future.
The remake aims to be one of the most exciting Danganronpa experiences to date, featuring a reimagined story, the return of a famous cast, and stunning new visuals.
