Fallout 5 Reportedly Being Developed by Bethesda
Development kicks off earlier than expected as Microsoft eyes a 2030 launch to capitalize on Fallout’s rising popularity.

Everyone who enjoyed the 2008 RPG has been waiting years for the Capital Wasteland to return with new graphics and gameplay. The idea has been going around online and in fan communities since a major leak during the FTC. Microsoft court case in 2023, but Bethesda has never put the project on hold. The Fallout game will be back, that much is clear.
Reportedly, the Fallout series may be entering a new golden age. According to a leak, Xbox and Bethesda are currently working on multiple Fallout games. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of this game. The official go-ahead has been given for Fallout 5. Many people thought this would happen eventually, but new reports indicate that progress is already being made. It's now beginning.

A recent leak suggests that Fallout 5 has been given the green light, and it appears that early work on the game is already underway. This isn't just a temporary green light that will be put away until Todd Howard finishes The Elder Scrolls 6 in the 2030s. This isn't just idle talk; it could mean that Fallout 5 is coming out a lot sooner than everyone thought.
Because Todd Howard is set on making The Elder Scrolls VI come out first, most Fallout fans thought the next game wouldn't come out until 2035 or later. However, after this new update, that date may have been moved up, possibly to 2031 or 2032. It still seems unlikely that the game will come out in 2030, but it's now possible.
That means the long-awaited follow-up to New Vegas and, of course, Fallout 5. The leak couldn't say for sure that New Vegas would come back, but the pieces are starting to fit together. Microsoft clearly thinks that putting more effort into the Fallout brand is a good idea.
This new push is probably due to the success of the Amazon Fallout TV show, which far surpassed expectations and gave the franchise new life. However, the timing wasn't right—Microsoft didn't have anything significant to complement the show's momentum. There was no Fallout 5 remake, spin-off, or even a sneak peek. The only real change was a small update to Fallout 4, which did bring in more players but felt like a missed chance in the end.
That was a mistake that Microsoft doesn't want to make again. As of now, Bethesda is focused on making The Elder Scrolls 6. Microsoft, on the other hand, wants to speed up Fallout's return, possibly by getting help from other studios.
But now comes the million-cap question: Who is working on Fallout 5?
We're pretty sure it's not Bethesda Game Studios—at least not yet. Todd Howard has said from the start that he wants to work on Fallout after Elder Scrolls. This won't change. Unless he's working two 80-hour jobs simultaneously, which, let's be honest, we wouldn't want anyone to do, another team must be in charge.

Now is where the rumors get really wild. Microsoft might be making a new studio inside the company just for the Fallout games. It wouldn't be strange—they have studios for Age of Empires, Halo, Forza, and Gears of War. It makes sense to have a studio just for Fallout.
Even more encouraging is the fact that Microsoft's numerous studios have a large number of developers who have worked on Fallout before. In that case, it is Obsidian, the studio that made Fallout: New Vegas. There's inXile Entertainment, which is run by Brian Fargo, one of the original creators of Wasteland —a game that preceded Fallout. There are also Bethesda and ZeniMax, of course.
Microsoft could easily combine the best people from these groups to get new projects underway. This doesn't mean Todd Howard isn't aware of anything. He could still write or be in charge of Fallout 5's story while someone else gets the game going. When The Elder Scrolls VI is done, Bethesda could help finish and polish the project.
Like a relay race, one team starts the lap and another team finishes the entire distance to the finish line. This is the most exciting news in years for Fallout fans. This means that the wait might not be as bad as we thought. Before Fallout 4 there was a ten-year break. Now, the vault door is finally creaking open again.
And it's not just Fallout 5 if Microsoft is really building a studio just for Fallout games. The future may be all about Fallout, with spin-offs, expansions, and side stories that bring the Wasteland back to life.
