Square Enix and Nexon have announced the cancelation of the Final Fantasy 11 remake that was being designed for mobile devices. The game was originally announced in 2015, but remained in development limbo for years. Very few screenshots or gameplay demos were ever released, leaving it unclear what the game would have looked or played like. The original game was an older PC focused MMO, making use of lots of menus and very few shortcuts. Ultimately, Square Enix was unsatisfied with Nexon’s progress and the two have agreed to cease development.
The remake’s intended release of 2016 seemed to indicate that Square Enix wanted to migrate the remaining PC player base to mobile. Regular content updates for the original Final Fantasy 11 staggered for some time, which reinforced fan belief that the original game was coming to an end. Many became worried that the mobile version would not retain their years of accomplishments and would be forced to start over. However, when news of the mobile version went dark, more frequent PC updates begun to release.
